In France the military isn't like the USA. It's way smaller (relative to the size of the countries). So they don't need recruiters to lie. If anything they refuse a lot of applicants. Most Air Force ("Armée de l'Air") jobs here would be highly specialized, most of the labor intensive and unskilled one already use civilians nowadays. So chances are, even if he doesn't become a pilot, they'll train him into something meaningful and interesting.
