Not just those who are literally bought and sold though, although that is also an issue, I'm just saying that it's not a dichotomy of either being a sex slave or an empowered porn star. There are predatory tactics used by some porn producers that prey on women who are otherwise technically free to choose. Although that may be how you're defining "sex slavery."

You should check out "Hot Girls Wanted". There are both very empowered women in porn and there are women who are abused, taken advantage of, and find it hard to leave.

The point of this law is to establish exactly this: what constitutes a verbally abusive relationship? There is obviously a difference between a lone aggressive comment and a long continuation of verbal abuse. And no, verbal abuse is not just interpretation. If someone spends months or years putting an SO down, making them feel worthless, forcing them to disregard friends and family, etc then there is no "interpretation" of the abuse, there's simply abuse.

But why try and put responsibility of the abuse on anyone but the abuser? Even if the victim "allows" or "enables" the abuse, in terms of responsibility its nothing compared to the responsibility held by the ABUSER.

Self-victimization? Are you sure the person creating the victim isn't, oh say, the abuser?

As I've explained in other comments, this sort of attitude does not work for domestic abuse because a major aspect of dynamic abuse is creating a dependency of some sort on the abuser (emotional, financial, etc) so the "just leave" doesn't work.

The point of the law is to give people an opportunity to deal with these situations. If someone jumped you and assaulted you, you would want some form of intervention because you'd want the guy off you and be able to retaliate legally. You wouldn't say "why is it the government's responsibility to keep a guy from stomping my ass?" it's the same for abusive relationships

Verbal abuse often involves making the victim feel worthless and unliked and creates an emotional dependency on their abuser. They don't leave because they feel they can't. Financial abuse involves using your access to money (and their lackthereof) to control your partner. A victim of this abuse can't leave because they may not have a place to stay, food for money, etc

Time to go against the grain a bit: this is actually a pretty good idea. Domestic abuse can involve more than just physical violence. Emotional and financial abuse are also terrible situations for the victims but since they are less obvious at times (it would be a difficult to recognize financial abuse for example) often the laws are not written to cover them. I understand that the idea of accusing someone of verbal abuse in order to hurt their reputation may be scary, but since much can be prov…

Can someone tell me if this is a joke or not? I want to believe it is. Ooh I can't believe that this may be serious.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
