And comparing ratios of applicants to hires may be a statistic in search of meaning if the overall outcome remains that white men are overrepresented as faculty members. Just because more White men apply for prestigious positions doesn’t automatically mean they are deserving or qualified, it just means their ego leads them to pursue opportunities that may or may not be a good fit.
