Alternate theory: This might be an office where the staff is predominantly men. We had a similar issue in our warehouse where men would use the women's bathroom all the time because there was one for each sex and easily a 10:1 ratio of men to women. The women complained a lot, but it just didn't make sense to us to have segregated toilets when they were just single stalls anyhow.

Look at St.Catharines-Niagara. We're not even heavy into manufacturing anymore. We get negative points for having tech-jobs... I've worked in the tech sector. It's about 50/50 men and women around here. When I worked for call centers in the tech-field years ago, almost all of the management team was female.

I'm so confused that a city with industries that are heavy in IT rank lower just because those jobs are traditionally held by men. There's nothing stopping women from getting those jobs, and in many universities there are programs to help women get those jobs ahead of their male classmates... so wouldn't those industries mean that it's better to be a women in those places?

Great point. This paper has a readership that's 90% college students, so the edginess and punchiness on the opinion page is meant to get people talking and rile them up a bit. It wasn't really about changing minds so much as starting a discussion. I don't write to make people take my side; I write to make people question and confirm or reconsider their own. Nah, the reviews were mostly from the arguments. It is ego-heavy and showy because it was an OpEd piece. It's in the opinion section... You can't be neutral because it's no engaging. I agree that, if this were on a news page, this would be a pretty douchy nearly masturbatory piece and would have way too much sarcasm to be in a paper... but that's what I love about column writing. At its peak, I paid nearly $400 a month for a car that wasn't worth $2400. I would have had to wrap it around a lamppost twice a year just to break even on the policy. They justify the rates by saying it's more to cover injury and compensation in accidents.

Absolutely. Also, a few years ago, the insurance companies admitted that some of the "studies" were done so that an accident Female-Male (drivers) was classified "Male"... meaning that, in any scenario, there was a 66.6% bias against male drivers. That aside, you still can't collect data based on sex. It's irrelevant and goes against the Charter of Rights in Canada. (Equivalent to being unconstitutional in the States...which seems to matter less and less each year anyhow.)

It's an annoying catch 22. People pay too much, so they figure "Better get my money's worth and claim for everything I can" which, in turn, causes the insurance companies to bellyache about costs (despite their multi-billion dollar profits each year) and beg for govt. help, etc. They then use those numbers to justify rate increases... it's a racket.

That's an interesting point. We pay more for less in that field, but then again, healthcare is Govt. run up here. If insurance was still run by the government, I bet we'd be in much better shape. In Canada it seems to vary quite dramatically by province. In Ontario, insurance is privatized which means they milk us for billions each year. If I drove my same car in Quebec, I'd pay about 10-15% of what I pay now. At the highest, I was paying nearly $400 a month for a car that cost me $2300. It would have been cheaper to be fined for driving without insurance than to actually pay my insurance each month -_-
