The messaging I received growing up, from every source I can recall (parents, media, schoolteachers) put a strong negative emphasis on shallowness and superficiality. The recurring worry became "what if I meet someone that I like but they only like me for my looks or my money?" and that informed how I chose to present myself to the world.
