Really only 2-5% of the American population has a "career" where they are specializing in something that they love and will be doing for a good chunk of their lives. A metric fuckload of my engineering professors had the same mindset and it was the dumbest thing ever. Their strategy was to make a class "artificially difficult" through inadequate teaching. Literally every student would fail the tests, and they would curve the people who got 50s up to an A. They had no interest in producing quality engineers but rather dropping a quarter of the student population so that they could make some bullshit claim of "academic rigor."
