Imagine somebody calling the bride a Fatty in her guestbook. That wouldn't be acceptable. It's not "they're insulting me for being thin"; it could be because of my hair or eyes or whatever. It's that people I don't know very well make comments on my body, and it makes me uncomfortable, and it shouldn't be appropriate at any size.

That's a good point, now that I reread my post I can see exactly why these two types of people would make comments. I'm sure I'm not the only thin person who has to take their crap. Not that I want to sit there grinning like an idiot while I'm being insulted, but I guess in this case my silence just allows their rudeness to be amplified and only reflects poorly on them, not me.

I find that, when being "funny", women tend to complain about things that only affect them & people exactly like them; where as men observe things about people as a whole. When I make another female laugh its usually because I'm making fun of somebody or complaining about a shared inconvenience. If I make a joke about a current event or an annoying thing women do, they don't laugh because they can't immediately relate.

She's a new but close friend of his mother & father. My husband has met her once, the same time I did, when she went on her rant.

Not to belabour the point, but here is another article from the OP's source that names 'put-downs' as a factor in emotional abuse. However, "Not all abuse happens to the same degree, or in the same way." Just because hitting your partner is a more visible and violent form of abuse (and therefore might be considered "worse") doesn't mean that insulting your partner isn't also abuse.

It sounds like you're saying emotional abuse shouldn't be considered actual abuse, and maybe you need to examine why that is.

Yep.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
