Fun fact, that expression actually means the opposite of what you use it for. The expression that the exception proves the rule originates with military proving grounds'. A proving ground is where armies would test(or "prove") their arms and armor, to make sure that they are of adequate quality, and disposed of, if they were not. A more modern verbiage of the expression would be "The exception tests the rule" Because if there's an exception, it's not really a rule.
