For some reason, I've heard of a "father by contribution" phenomenon a couple times. Longer hair, piercings, etc. on guys were (and in some cases still may be) associated with delinquency for whatever reason. It probably has/had something to do with the military institutionalization of short hair, actually. After all, a good young man would follow the rules and grow up, do his duty, serve, and so on... the rebellious ones, the bad boys, might go against the established standard. Many schools have dress codes that were developed/written several decades ago, when many of the characteristics (long hair, earrings, etc.) were tied to "hood" behavior. I immediately teared up after not seeing her for an entire month. When she said daddy, my wife grabbed her head and turned her away and said "don't talk to strangers." Goddamn.
