We did the same thing. We used an attorney to file the documents but made all decisions between ourselves. Cost about ~$850 for everything.

The kids deserve you doing what you can to allow them to live a happy life. It is the mom's job to find happiness. Also, a bigger house won't make someone happy if they are unhappy.

I got divorced 5 months ago. I now have peace and more money since I'm more if a saver. I have started exercising more. I have less chores as I moved from a house to an apartment. I'm in a walkable neighborhood so I get out more. I can plan for a future since I don't have to deal with someone that doesn't know what they want. I can cook the meals I want to eat and not the ones we want to eat.

I don't think that is how that will work. An uncontested divorce is where both partners agree to all terms of the divorce before filing.

Sometimes a divorce isn't about getting out with more but making sure the other person loses more. I would avoid a situation where they are in a position to make both parties lose as much as possible. A primary income earner may have to support a spouse who didn't have an income during the marriage. They may also get child support depending on who gets custody.

I've taken the online advice to give myself 1 year to process the divorce and grow as a person. I'm not going to turn down dates if they come but I'm not actively looking for a relationship for a year from my divorce.

I had the option of buying out my ex and increasing my monthly payment from 3k to 4k. I chose to rent at 2k a month. Gives me more money at the end of each money, a nice amount from the sale, and time to think about what I want in the future. Also frees up the time I was spending on house maintenence. Not sure if I'll own again or rent for life but I have time to figure it out.

I didn't have a kid to consider during my divorce but I had a $3000 a month mortgage and would have needed to do another $1000 a month for 10-15 years to buy my ex out of the house. I'm much happier in a $1800 a month apartment. Less yard work, no maintenance, lower utilities. I can now take some time to figure out how I want my future to look like instead of being looked I to a house that was too large for me with many memories.

You aren't a failure. You are just moving to another part of the journey called life. Marriage was just one of the many experiences you had. Would you call a child who is falling while trying to learn to ride a bike a failure? Neither is a divorce because your life continues after the divorce.

I thought my finances would be tighter post divorce but I realized I have a lot more wiggle room when I'm not subsidizing my ex. I made about 50% more than her for the last 5 years. Before that we made the same amount. My stability allowed her to take a 50% pay cut and job hop because every job made her unhappy. Any time I wanted to save up to get something, the money got spent on other things. Not I can actually save up for things I want.

IRS determines filing status based on your married status on the last day if the year. If you were still married on the last day of 2025, you should have filled a married. Did you file single or married filing seperately?

I got a therapist before my divorce which helped me through the divorce. I also took the advice to not date for a year to give me time to heal and work on myself. I recommend that to others undergoing divorce.

My opinion is to setup withholding based on what you think your status will be for the year. In my case, I didn't actually change my withholding post divorce as we both earned similar amounts.

Not sure what you mean by update it now. It is a thing you select when you file taxes. You may want to update your withholding using the W-4 form.

Your status is what it was on the last day of the calendar year. Married filing seperately is horrible for Roth IRA contributions so consider that.

I was told of my divorce in November of 2025 and got the decree in December of 2025. Hoping to have the house sold soon. Got about 50% of our total networth and splitting the house equity 50/50 so should end up in a really good position. "Our" original plan was to FIRE by 2035 and looking like I'll be able to make that solo.

She asked for a divorce about 2 months ago. We filed a couple weeks later after deciding we can do this amicably. Told the lawyer how we wanted to split things. Lawyer filed and we are divorced 27 hours later. Paid lawyer~$850. Hoping to have the house listed and sold soon. Her having to move would happen regardless of him buying her out of the house or them selling the house so I don't think it should be included. Could make an argument that he is saving money by not moving so should compensate her.

I had the option of buying her out or selling. Currently selling with a 50/50 equity split written into the divorce decree. I didn't need that size of house and didn't want to pay the amount to buy her out.

We paid s lawyer $1000 to do the legal stuff during our divorce. We told them how we are splitting assets and they wrote it up and submit it to the judge. Took about 1-2 week to figure out the asset splits. Took ~30 hours from submission to rubber stamp.
