The problem with most nice guys is that they bombard you with their "niceness" to the point you feel, like, you owe them something without your consent. And it's usually true, you feel uneasy around too nice guy, fear that when you firmly say "no" to him, he will get offended. I suggest reading "How To Win Friends and Influence People" by Carnegie Dale. There is one chapter that points out important thing - no matter if you win or lose argument, you lose either way. You won't make your adversary change his opinions and beliefs, you will only strenghten these in him, and he will resent you cause you tried to make him look stupid. Of course in context of family, they won't disown you or something. But you propably won't convince them to your beliefs anyway.

The thing is, most of times when people feel fear is irrational. Fear is useful as you mentioned, in real life threat situation, fear of height, etc. If you feel fear among people or when approaching a woman, it's irrational and you either need to raise your self esteem or accept it and push on towards these situations nonetheless.
