Oh my god, this is me. When I finally fight back it’s “you’re abusing me emotionally and verbally”. That’s what happens when you get married at 20 - you don’t even know what your boundaries are, and by the time you do, it’s too late. Tell her to clean the fucking stove.

I do not fucking get this logic. Living with an estranged spouse with a risk of DV claim while making yourself sick every time you pull into the driveway is NOT a recipe for a successful divorce. Get the fuck out, deal with it with your lawyer - that’s what they’re for. As for switching lawyers, absolutely! I had a lawyer for the first 3 months and then switched to someone else, no issue at all. Burn those hours, that could be $5k saved right there.

My god man, I’m sorry. You did the right thing. Be strong… the alternative is worse.

Yes this. I know because I did the same thing to my wife.

Seriously, fucking amazing advice. I’m 3 months in and have started some of this, but you’re so right on so many things. I’ve learned to really love my bachelor pad - I’ve never really picked my own furniture before, so that was kinda fun. Rebuilding family relationships is another awesome piece of advice - my brother and sister have been unbelievably supportive. But of all of it, “it’s a marathon not a sprint” is probably the lost valuable. I’m up and down depending on the day, but I recognize …

Same situation. Reddit doesn’t take kindly to cheaters, but I’m sympathetic. My wish is that I could have ended it before the affair got out of hand, which has caused a lot of pain and estrangement from two of my kids. That being said, feelings are all over the place - I feel OK one day, and like absolute shit the next. Have a therapist that I’ve been working with that has helped me unpack WHY I started cheating in the first place, and the wife has been so incredibly horrible during the divorce …

But what if the wife had a weekly cleaning service and never cooked? And she still gets half+ of everything you worked for? And what if you’re kicking yourself for creating a spoiled little princess who is marshaling the powers of a Beverly Hills divorce attorney to grind you up and spit you out? Well that’s my fucking life….

I was absolutely stunned. I sat there at my desk when my lawyer was telling me, absolutely stunned. I’m still stunned. And she used it to keep me from my home, and divide my kids - she even told my 16 year old that I had hit her, and the 16 year old hasn’t spoken to me since before this all blew up. She pounced like a tiger, I wasn’t ready, and now I’m literally a man losing his family. Fucking horrible.

OK, this is freaking me out. This is EXACTLY my situation. 30 years of marriage, now after she filed for divorce, I'm a worthless piece of shit - never mind I've given her everything she has, and worked hard to support the family for years. And you're right - much family and most friends will fall for her bullshit about what a piece of shit you are, and not even worth reaching out to. It's very lonely on the other side. Finally - and this is a big one - watch out for the fake domestic violence c…

Speaking as a cheater, it was a long road to get to the point where I finally cheated. Wife was horrible, manipulative, and threatened to “burn me to the ground” if I divorced her. I thought I could keep the marriage together by having something on the side, and it actually worked for a while, but then the marriage got worse, she found out, and now I’m in the same place I would have been if I’d asked for a divorce before. Just asking everyone here to realize that there’s two sides to every story…

I’m the cheating party in our relationship, with a business in scope, and she is discovering the shit out of me. It goes on and on and on. We were even willing to just acknowledge any disputed funds as “non-community purpose” which means she gets half (above the 50/50 split” just to make it stop, but she’s just grinding me down. Now it’s just kind of a side show. My lawyer and accountant give her what she asks for, we wait another 3 months then they request more.. and I’m paying for her attorney…

Do you have this post saved in your notepad and pop it out every time someone mentions counseling? Agree it’s not ideal, particularly if both parties aren’t trying to work it out, but it is an important step in making SURE you want a divorce. Look - divorce is a fucking train wreck. It’s a nuclear bomb in your life, affecting your family, your kids, your friendships. It’s expensive, painful, and horrific. I’m three months in and I think about it every minute. But. It’s worth fighting through for…

You’re right about the escorts. Coming out of a long marriage where the sex was as boring as it could be, being with a few crazy girls in their 20’s changes the way you think about the world.

A man after my own heart. Similar story, now living in the Philippines. Endless mind-blowing sex with 25 year olds, great expat community and low cost of living. Trips to Thailand every few months, life is good. And these girls speak English.
