I think because it's only one part of the equation for men. Women want a lot of things in their man including but not limited to physical appearance. They can't everything so they'll compromise on some things. So just being in good shape won't necessarily get you a hot chick. However, I think it's not true for women. If you're physically attractive as a woman, that's all men really need. So losing weight is much more important for women.

I had an economics professor who explained marriage: it imposes a social cost on you splitting up. Therefore, it makes it easier to make joint investments such as children or buying a house because you and your partner have less incentive to walk away. Lots of arranged marriages historically have nothing to do with love. It has to do with combining families wealth and passing it down generations through children. If the partners are in love with each other, that's nice but it's not necessary.
