By mid 30s, most people who have their shit together have paired up already, reducing the pool available for you. In your 20s, this wasn’t the case as the fear of losing out isn’t as imminent back then, so more are open to trying out more widely, hence the increased availability of partners within the same cohort.

Average reduction in sexlessness in males combined with an uptick in STDs in females implies a plausible reason for this: The average male may be having less sex, but subsets within the male population may be taking up the slack / opportunity advantages from the ones who aren’t. This subset of males with much higher sexual activity rates with large numbers of females favors the spread of STDs significantly, all else being the same.
