Why are you being downvoted for this? You're saying Poperiearchy blew your mind, right?

Wow. This is such good stuff. Some seriously solid logic and rational (albeit emotionally charged) arguments. Bravo AVFM. For those discussing the several decades of the Men's Movement: What are your thoughts on the key players?

Stilgar, All due respect. Every relationship is different. The point she is making is relevant: Others are trying to force her into a view of relationships that is 'normative'. She has pretty precisely laid out that this is not indigenous to her relationship or her own psyche. I would point out that but a few decades ago, health professionals thought that's many other styles of relationship were not 'normative'. This includes homosexual relationships as well as many styles of heterosexual ones. …

You know, it strikes me that Adrien Chen, and what he pulled with ViolentAkres has just emboldened this sort of person to enact Internet 'justice'. Everyone wants to make a name for themselves in the same scummy way Chen did.

Thanks. These are all good points. And the reasons why I raised an eyebrow at the questionable wording of 'lessening aggression' for the men's class. 'Channeling aggression for proper defense' would have rung a little truer to my ear.

I don't think you should unsubscribe. Screw what crap comments some people leave at your doorstep. The point of the submission is that though this was a crap comparison to make, and not logical, it still finds its way into textbooks (see OP's original post). It's foundational to feminism and even though there are positives to feminism, its ideas like this that still permeate social dialogue. That social dialogue then has its effect on the legislation--child custody, divorce, rape accusations--th…

Dear sweet baby Jeebus: Does the idea that the wives of slave owners didn't enjoy the wealth that slave owning brought, never cross these 'theorists' minds? That they didn't support and back their husbands immorality, for that advantage? That ALL people can participate in evil? I think it's a much more respectable and humanist position to say that woman are capable of all things---good and evil. To simply say they were harmless victimized pure 'angels'..... ...well.....isn't that what men did in…

Someone who's waited many a table here. Can confirm: that last statement is bullshit. I've been flirted with a plenty. Even sometimes been picked up (when it was welcomed flirting). I've even been flirted with inappropriately and had my ass grabbed on a restaurant floor. It DOES happen.

Right! When did being the homemaker become a bad thing? And isn't part of the overall debate for feminism about empowering women because they're the child bearers/primary childrearers? I hear valid stuff about the miracles of breast milk, and have heard dis likable female family members use a simple biological fact like that to offer disdain towards men. As though we are less miraculous creatures than they. Point being, what is taken as a point of pride and power, one second, will be turned arou…

Wait wait wait....when did the very important task of maintaining home life, rearing children, teaching those children values, making meals for family members become 'basic animal needs'? When did that lose it's importance and respectability? Not just for stay at home mothers, but stay at home dads? And wait: when did marketing, media, government, the church etc. NOT reinforce in MEN a specific set of ideas about their 'duties'? And wait: when did those that reaped the benefits of said marketing,…

Thanks for the perspective: The ' went away to fight and did not come back' and how the author of the article may not completely realize the depth and breadth of what that tradition meant. Men went to fight (maybe not today, but certainly in other instances and times) to protect and reinforce a society that was essentially a home nest for the women who stayed behind. That's a statement with its own complexities to be sure, but that's mostly what men were sold it was. Good point.

Well...I get a lot of "are you SUUUURE she meant it that way/that's what she was doing?" from female friends when I try to discuss an issue about a particular woman who has said/done something outrageous or misandristic. That shit drives me bat shit crazy. Because it short circuits the discussion before it even begins, and derails the point I'm driving at. So I try to offer to others the benefit of the doubt FIRST. But I see and like your negative/positive point.

I can't speak for 'real women'. I can barely talk about what the 'real me' is sometimes. But I can safely say that logic, reason, and truth have a great propensity for coming to the forefront. And this woman utilizes none of those things. In short....I agree with you. Lol.

I have a friend who's good at calming me down when someone does something SO indescribably offensive that I want to kick their ass. He says: "Let them cut their own throat." I'm not saying I want to kick this gals ass, but she is doing a fine job of slowly cutting her own throat. And desensitizing others to the 'when in doubt--call it rape' tactic.

Plus: reversing the joke or the GENDER of the joke is a great opportunity to bring the original poster of the joke to REFLECT. That is, assuming they even care to. But 'switching it' is also a great device to keep it even keeled and not to escalate. All great arguments have that element.

You actually expected a good response with that second to last line of snark? The criticism is mostly of the article which pretty much states that 'if she were a man...'. It's debatable, yes, that some of her expectations might have been equal to what a man might request. But it's common practice, at any level of job search to tread lightly with any request for additional benefits/time/resources.

Cannot agree with this enough. Age limits upon sexuality affects all of us. Both genders. We HAVE to have a forum for discussion on this. I'm not entirely sure if that's a point that can be argued (rather---if the question you asked is relevant to the main point of the article). Seems like the point is: what happened was illegal. You make a good point about content. But remember: they've had DECADES of getting their shit together (the feminists). I know a LOOOOOT of Internet comic artists who would argue against the point you just made. Stephen Bissette, a fairly well known comic artist (worked with Alan Moore on Swamp Thing) is a bit of a champion on that very cause. Seems the point is that this woman's work was used without PERMISSION. As to compensation, that is something that should have been discussed BEFORE use and is between the artist and the person who uses the art. Simplistic point, I know. But bears repetition. :-)

Im with Dr._Pepper_35 on this one. If you click on the link he provided, this young woman is actually pretty rational in her written and spoken arguments. Yes. Yes. Yes on so many counts. Alienation is not an experience unique to any minority or 'ism'. The particular reasons FOR that forced alienation are. But it is a common experience, and human solidarity is the ultimate goal of any empowerment for ANY group; not the intimidation or 'other'-ization of another group in an attempt at empowering ones own caste.

PRECISELY. If we raise our voices as men (and it get's exponentially worse, the physically larger, stereotypically 'more questionable' we are as physical presences in the world). Consider a small slight gay man shouting his opinion or expressing anger. People would just call him 'fierce'. Vitriol, like any shade of anger, is direct communication for something (an awareness) that has been suppressed. We live in a day and age, where Men's identity is fogged over by the empowerment of others. It's a natural and normal process for a little vitriol to show itself. Give it time, and show support, and do the research. Live as a man , and notice the things that are talked about. Controlling others language as a first step to engaging in dialogue is often not helpful.

The difference being, most of the guys here, as I said above, have been burned REAL bad, by a combination of female unreasonableness AND societal standards stacked AGAINST them. Where a larger percentage of 'feminists' have just been told, for decades now, that MEN are the source of all problems, and merely accept that on faith, and act on it. I would wager heavily on that.
/r/MensRights23/12/12 10:56 PM

Well…that will just figure itself out wont it? There are a lot of men here who have been terribly burned by women. Unreasonably so, and with the laws all on the side of the women who acted like dicks. Would you go on a feminist thread and say the same thing? You would get downvoted so fast, you'd whistle as you fell. And calling misogyny? Outside of one or two statements, where do you see misogyny? I see valid griping.
/r/MensRights23/12/12 10:53 PM

Plenty of 'slurs' being thrown around in plenty of subreddits. Would you prefer everyone typed out "unreasonably demanding cis gender female claiming more than what is morally/ethically fair and fine"? Succubus is a rather nice shorthand for a rather unreasonable, and borderline disgusting female personality.
/r/MensRights23/12/12 10:50 PM

I wouldn't downvote you for this statement. But being 'excluded from the work force' is sort of a non-argument. Are you implying that it's okay to push economic disparity because women used to accept the societal role of homemaker, and men used to accept the role of breadwinner? And that system worked for a long time? So where is the logic, when finally gaining independence and financial self sufficiency, you decide you ALSO need to fleece your ex for all theyre worth?

Isn't the AIM of Feminism to advocate the idea of women owning power and agency? Yet….through the idea of a 'woman who has had a few drinks, cannot possibly give consent/ therefore she was raped' disempowers women at large. It takes away her agency. I wonder if that shiate could have been shut down right away if OP just very FIRMLY and with a CLEAR voice said, "Maam, I did NOTHING to your child. He was crying. I brought him to the front to find you and your HUSBAND." Or some such combination of words. I'm not razzing or judging the OP, and of course hindsight/ shoulda-woulda-coulda is always 20/20. I just find it frustrating to think that there isn't a rational way to take CONTROL of a situation and come out like the boss you were for doing…

I have always wanted, as a way to vent my anger at this sort of crap, to develop a prosthetic wallet. Its got an inflatable packet in it, that leads to a tube and a small bulb. That way, when you go out in public you can just shoot a couple of squeezes of air in it, and BINGO. Women will look at you, and think, "I'll never hear the words, 'No, you cant have that' again!!!"

About four years ago, due to a breakup, and a number of other concurrent tragedies, I went through a nervous breakdown. Full psychosis, because I had bottled up my disappointments for so long. Yet, one of the first things that most people asked me, or talked to me about was "What did you to to 'Ex's Name'"? Seriously, the first thing. They asked me what I did to HER? And though I got some support (there are people who i will NEVER forget for showing up at the hospital and who were there for me) …

Unless, of course he is a homosexual man. Then he is allowed to be 'fabulous'. The whole article is just bullshit, trying to stir up more bullshit, about a bunch of bullshit opinions. This is what the promise of the internet has turned into. More parrot noises from small minds.

See….I keep repeating myself in this thread. You SEE their point, clearly and well. Can you SEE hers? You're offering more clarity of vision, and understanding to the attendant and the airline (I'll forego the man and his responses, for the sake of argument only) who had clearly made a mistake than to this woman, to whom 'mistakes' like this probably commonly had happened. I really wonder why that is? I am really asking the question without any criticism.

Okay….so a woman is being treated ill by a creepy man in a subway. I should just ignore that? The point was, the author and her friend had both paid for tickets next to each other. The airline failed. This man had an opportunity to help her correct the injustice. He failed to do so, yet apologizes. Somewhere, sometime, you just have to overlook your sense of fairness to yourself ('why should I get involved if that chick cant tell the creepy guy hanging on her to fuck off?') and help other PEOPLE…

THANK YOU, for being so honest. I really appreciate that. No…sneaky shit is NOT good on both sides. Physical shit, or threats, no good. She had a small cadre of Momma's boy gay men doing her bidding. Thought I was going to do something violent. I was crushed, and weeping my face off. The very LAST thing I wanted was to hurt her. Shortly after, I got myself so sick, I did a two week hospital stay. But I'm a man, right? That's either 'unpossible' as Im a dumb stone, or I should 'man up'. Damned if…

Look, Im loathe to come up with a counter example, in my life, or in imagination, simply because I'm getting tired of making my point. Im getting a great deal of flack for standing up for her, even though in my opinion she's got a point. In short, if, as a man, you were faced with a similar situation, and a woman, in complicity, just took your seat, having all the available info in front of her (the 'white man' in the essay must have been standing right there when her friend was called up, airpl…

Ive done PLENTY of customer service. I dont use the 'stupid voice'. If I dont want to do something for them to rectify the situation, it's usually because I have an issue with them. Customer service is customer service. It's blind to the fact of anything. And it seems to me that there are a lot of us here on Men's rights that cite several examples of our experience, and (rightfully) label it one thing or the other. And there IS a line drawn between 'verbal assault' and trying to make yourself he…

She accuses him of complicity TO the racism and sexism. All I know, is if the same situation happened to ME, as a white male, I would have been plenty pissed. The attendants had shut her down. There was no reasoning with them. Ive had the same accusations leveled at me, as the one you described in the store. An irresponsible young man didn't want to pay his rent, and expected a full security deposit refund. When he moved out, he expected this, and when I wouldn't give it to him, he called me a r…

The point was NOT about a correct or incorrect boarding pass. That was lost when she tried to explain, and was treated the way she was treated (her friend included). 20 years ago, customer service was a much different thing. Airlines accommodated much more readily. She wasnt arguing over a first class ticket. She was arguing over racism and sexism. Which are two of the crux arguments of Men's Rights, commonly.

And in saying ALL of this, in the course of the WHOLE thread, I merely want to make the point that I am offering to HER, the same sense of justice, and compassion that I would EXPECT, whether I was a man or not. That is why I frequent Men's Rights.

By virtue of the fact that it DID happen 20 years ago, makes it even more of a charged issue. We've come a long way against racism/sexism in 20 years. So much, so, that it has blown back and given men societal problems for just being men. And she doesn't JUST blame the injustice on the 'white man'. She makes the point that he could have done something about it, concisely and conclusively. I think she is right. The fact that the airline wrongly issued the boarding pass to the white man, and would…

It DOES make sense, and thank you. But what you forget, is that it DOES happen. We know as men, that this DOES happen to us. In other ways. She makes a compelling argument that this is a sexist/racist situation. And I am sorry, but someone doing something different (the black woman and the white man) goes beyond anecdotal. These are situations that INFORM the author's experience. I think this is a remarkably charged series of arguments against this woman because of the phrase "Killing Rage". I h…

Ehhh…She DOES make the point that her and her friend tried to correct the error, and the stewardess merely speaks to her in a 'loud voice as though she doesnt speak english'. She also makes another point in the linked essay, that there was another similar situation where a black woman who had the correct boarding pass sat elsewhere because a white man without the correct boarding pass wouldnt move. And that this man was NOT called to the front. If those are not indicators of racism/sexism, I don…

If she wants to be judged by the quality and content of her thoughts, we can't give her an out as to how misplaced her target was because she was a woman, or she was angry. True, yes. But she makes a point, a GOOD one, that this man was the 'last line' of argument against what was going on. He could have nipped it in the bud, then and there. And abuse? I wouldnt call her statement to him (presuming it was accurately phrased in the essay, and not yelled or added with a physical display) abuse. I …

You're right, of course, about intent. I posted elsewhere in this thread, that, while he may at some level be expressing his understanding he is ALSO being an ass. I mean, LOOK at his face. He's a clown. I guess I am arguing, that if I or any man has to rethink what secondary sexual characteristic baring, or genitalia baring (lets be honest, some women dress in a manner that leads the eyes to the genitalia or close proximity to them) means to them and make a willful effort to NOT BE INFLUENCED b…

I am NOT an apologist. But to be fair, this essay can be construed as a literary device called a 'confessional'. I am an 'entitled white Christian male' and yet everyday I see little brutalities that people heap upon each other. I recognize that the catalyst for change begins in the moments that we intentionally ignore each other, for our own gain, even if that gain harms someone else, or perpetuates a common societal practice that we all, in the PUBLIC eye of friends or family, vocalize against…

That's presupposed in my calling him an ass. But don't you see, in that rally they are asking an entire culture to demystify/detach meaning from a woman's sexual characteristics (secondary or otherwise). and yet, pretty immediately, this guys pecker was attached to male domination/rape. Breasts exposed=/=license to rape Penis exposed=/=male patriarchy and or rape of women a penis is a penis. Except in a Freudian dream, where it's a cigar.

If I am to defend a woman's right to what was PREVIOUSLY indecent exposure (breast baring, and possible genital bearing--depends on how provocatively dressed the woman decides she wants to go to make her point), and I am WILLING to do so, then you are DAMN right I am going to defend this guy's right to do the same to make a point. The only THINGS that make it indecent are societal ideas about context, and the values that are assigned to a man's genitalia. And isnt this the SAME thing that these …

If you are going to argue that breasts should be demystified as sexual objects (they are, after all, 'secondary sexual characteristics'--go look at a science textbook) then I can, in the same turn, argue that a penis exposed in public has ABSOLUTELY NO CONNECTION to the 'Phallic Patriarchy' that these women are (legitimately, because it is their RIGHT to protest such things, regardless of what I, You, or anyone thinks) protesting. Yes, this guy is obviously doing what he's doing to get a reactio…

Every society makes 'It's choice' to be the society it is. People who steal also get their hands chopped by a machine. One is NOT comparable to the other, but until the members of that society decide to change that society (one way or the other) who are you to speak for every individual and decide whether or not they are conditioned to do so? 'The truth is they keep going back to the beaters.' The truly 'icky truth' is that THAT (in this day and age) is a CHOICE. Disempowerment would be a legal system that doesn't give the woman the right to tell him to fuck off. And that is NOT what we have.

Yeah. The cigarette marketing campaign by Freud's nephew. Im familiar. Bit of a straw dog, really, as the point was to sell more cigarettes. You could speak of ANYTHING as conditioned into us. I dont know. There is something in this statement that still disempowers the beaten woman. My mother was a battered woman. After decades of therapy and personal work on MYSELF, I realized she was also a deeply manipulative person. I think automatic beatification of a person who is a victim of anything is not showing proper respect to the strength and circumstances of that individual.
