The thing too with throwing shit at someone is that you know a physical reaction would follow and it wouldn't be a one punch and you're done type thing, this could legitimately result in you being a vegetable the rest of your life. Hitchen's views on this are interesting and applicable as well. He basically says that women don't need to be funny because they can still get a good partner without being actively funny, whereas men often need to be funny to attract the level of woman that they desire. Agreed she should have been given a longer sentence, but from the fairly limited info provided, it sounds like numerous other teachers/administrators were aware of the situation but failed demonstrably to protect a minor in their charge from rape. That's a pretty heavy charge when you think about it, and I think the punitive damages awarded are fully justified.

What's so wrong about that statement? His girlfriend lied to him and told him that she had been raped, and his drunken decision was to fight the guy who allegedly did it. Now, because of that lie, Lester is permanently injured, and Hollyman is going to spend three years in prison and have a record that will follow him everywhere. Admittedly it wasn't smart to attack Lester and he needs to take some responsibility for that, but as the judge says, the "provocation was significant".

I would first talk to your sister to try and have her drop the charges if you believe that they are false. If that doesn't work, I would go to the police and chat with them; tell them what she supposedly said ("...why not" etc.). Better educated people get better jobs, wages, and generally have a much more stable life than those who don't.
