In general, I kind of agree with you. Going on evidence, the New Deal era has been the most prosperous for the most people. I like the social safety net. I like public education. I don't like being told what I can do in the privacy of my own home. Unfortunately, the system is made so that no one is ever really happy with it. I do think that the Beltway crowd is increasingly ignorant of life outside it.

I can get with social libertarianism - i.e what you put in your body and mind is nobody's business. I can't get with Libertarianism. Seems like utopianism to me. I hate hard ideologies anyway.

I go to Al-Jazeera quite often. On many issues, their reporting is way better than the networks in the US. Vet friends returning from that area are generally favorable about them. I'm not asking for the news to necessarily have a liberal bias. In the sense that the foundation of the government was not conservative, i.e. resisting change, yes, the government was designed to be liberal. in comparison to other governments of the period, it was very much the opposite of the more common conservative monarchies. I don't just listen to one narrative, I hope. Everyone likes to listen to a bit of news and commentary that they are interested in, and my tastes run a little to the left. The right is even more caught up in the batshit crazy right now. It's sort of like a pendulum. When they become more sane, I will be more receptive.

The thing is that the whole idea of the US government, at least originally, was liberal. I think there are different flavors of that, and the radfem far-left puts a bad taste in my mouth, but I still believe in progress.

I gave this a lot of thought. I think the primary issue we are having here is whether human beings have value. This cannot be demonstrated logically, although it may be argued logically. It is a belief, and nothing more. It is my belief that all people have value unless I personally know that they do not have the equipment to empathize with and see the possible value in others they have not met. I really hate the whole "you're brainwashed" thing. It basically makes the target of the comment into someone who is not capable of making their own decisions and removes their credibility about everything, including themselves. The Greek system is mainly a load of crap anyway. Plenty of student groups that support men and women , but don't have strange rituals, hazing, and abuse of rank as part of them. Good question. Don't know, but I'm going with no. Schools often post information about students right on the walls. Progress, grades, etc. Students may grade other students work. Unless the school has a clear written and disseminated policy, I don't think there is any expectation. The student handbook would be the place to look.
