Bear in mind, he was a toothless bum. How would 99% of girls react to being hit on by a bum, no matter the opener used?

Not too sure to be honest. Laugh and say "when you've got something to bring to the table, bring it to the table where I'll be sitting" and point to you and your pals. Take the above with a pinch of salt. Or duck in case she gets really offended. Whichever.

Alternatively, if you actually would like a drink or a chance to continue talking with this girl while having a drink, reply with: "sure, you get the first round and I'll get the next one." Result, if she actually wants to talk to you, you get a drink or two and a conversation, and if she just wanted a free drink, you've found out early and at no expense.

Genuine question now - has anyone (winging or otherwise) tried this approach/introduction in the real world, and how did it work out?

All these words make sense individually, but...

I know silence can work wonders in a lot of situations, like sales pitches etc, but I'd never thought to use it in a scenario like this. Seems it's a great idea. Does that actually work well? I'd imagine standing there just smiling having been the last one to speak might be a little... I dunno, strange maybe?

I agree, it was quite painful to parse the first time through.

"What? Have women attracted to you because a script says so?" Alternately: "What, have women attracted to you because a script says so?"

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
