I think it has to do with rationalization. Sometimes (probably more often than we think) we come up with an opinion and then come up with an explanation after to justify it, we can do our best to be rational and change our opinion by reevaluating the reasoning for it, but we're human and it's a thing we do. Maybe these people do it so often that they don't bother verifying their opinions, they just feel something and then go with it. Otherwise I don't understand how people can be surprised with …

He clearly said they're the basics, and the other commenter said they would have found it super useful when they were a beginner. You can't do calculus if you don't know arithmetic, but arithmetic is still very important and useful.
