My ex was a covert narcissist. Always got what she wanted her entire life and was spoiled. Gave her everything she wanted as well: new house that we built, a family life. And once we had kids, like other comments say, she didn’t want the intimacy, closeness or affection. It was only after leaving that I’m now able to rediscover myself, expensive as it is/was, but I know now that she only liked the idea of marriage. The idea of being a mom. Not actually working for these things. But to answer OP’…

You sure it’s yours?

I second this. It’ll get easier as you go along. Just reinforce to your kids that you’re always available if/when they need you. At the same time, you need to take time to fill your own cup. You identify as a father, which is fine and all, but you need to also be you.

I wish my ex had agreed to do mediation, but she wanted to go through attorneys instead. She didn’t touch my $401k, and kept the house in exchange. In the end, I had to borrow from my 401k to survive because housing is so expensive. Once my name is off the house, I’ll get a chunk of change to put towards the next house. That was more of a generous settlement on my end, but I wanted to avoid more attorney fees in fighting it. I’m nearly a year out and I wouldn’t change anything

You’re only giving her ammunition to say it’s why she did what she did in the first place. Act the better man and make her think twice. You can fight it and never know peace, or accept it and know peace.

Obviously by judging the comments, you’re not alone. I moved out in January and the divorce was final in May, however it was my decision in this case. Even still, seeing how my kids are coping with it has made me contemplate things. And all the same, they are what keep me going. Find what brings you joy and focus on that.

Also lawyers are expensive. Push for mediation if you can. After my uncontested divorce and the negotiation back and forth, I probably racked up $10k in attorney fees.

If everything is verbal now, as it seems by your post, I’d lawyer up now and start the process. Get a custody schedule in writing first and set the precedent. My divorce was uncontested, but we still negotiated for months back and forth, which cost a bunch in lawyer fees… so towards the end there were concessions made on both ends. Maybe it’s also just a summer thing? This is my first summer with shared custody and it’s been all wonky. It may very well just change again anyways when school resum…

Same. She left her “career” (a dead-end part time job) to stay at home with the kids. Paying the price for it now, literally

Kids will adapt, whatever happens. For me personally, it was a different situation but it was something I knew would keep happening. Your situation could be the same… why kick the can down the road and waste what time you have left with this person you can no longer trust? 5 years is diabolical. It’s another if it had been a one-off mistake

Change your life so that you can live it; not wait for it. Kids will adapt, and they’ll get a better version of you. Good luck to you sir

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
