Copy paste from my comment above: Yep, happily married, with kids. This is my second go-round. The first ended badly. I learned that my hollywood notions of what made marriage work are pretty much bullshit. I believed in romance and true love and all that nonsense. Married a hot blond model with daddy issues and devoted my life to making her happy. A year later we were divorcing. Luckily, I didn't lose too much so yah. My second time around I knew better. I found someone who I actually enjoyed b…

How did your work life change? I assume you saw some differences in how you interacted with your boss, employees and coworkers. Can you do a similar before and after for your professional life?

Risk vs. Return my friend. :) Be aware of the risk, plan for it, minimize it, make sure it's worth it and then accept that you have to take it if you want what you want.

I don't know enough about common law marriages and such to speak as an authority on them. I will say that it wasn't the legal part of marriage I was looking for, it was the moral / commitment / emotional. That's the example I was looking to set for my kids, even as an atheist. And I was happy to find a woman who was interested in the same thing.

Agreed. I worked for a while in a giant tech company after my start up was acquired and it was full of bureaucracy and people just shuffling papers around. The pay was great but the day to day work over there drove me insane.

Not sure I was your mythical 30 year old but I'll give this a shot. In my early 30's I was living a life that was somewhat similar to this. I was making really good money being a mid level manager at a high tech company, I had great friends, I had just started hitting the gym a couple of years prior so I was in great shape and yes, I was having plenty of sex. It's different than being in college and it's not the same as the celeb life style you see in magazines. There's a lot of hard work involv…

This may be true for your industry but it's very different in tech startup land where I work. I'm a VP at a mid sized company and things work very differently here. You get promoted based on your work and your ability to work with others, and the smart person who works hard and manages their career is the one who gets ahead. That said, fraternization is ALWAYS a bad idea, for both men and women. Just don't do it.

That's a great question. Is it possible? Yes. Certainly there are people who have all of those things without marriage. However, I find them to be the exception, not the rule. I looked around me and also at various pieces of research and all of them showed that kids do better when raised in a more traditional household. I also realized that the kind of woman I am more likely to be successful with in my goals would be one that wanted marriage. Specifically, not a woman who wanted marriage as a to…

That really depends on what you want and on your tolerance for risk. I had a lot of fun in my 20's. I built a great career, had good friends and had plenty of sex. In my 30's though, I decided that I wanted a family and the best way to do that was through marriage. Could I just go out and get some people pregnant? Of course. However, I believe that part of having kids is taking responsibility for them, being there for them and setting a good role model for them. I'm now 42, happily married and h…

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
