If someone walked up to you on the street talking about aliens and world peace, you'd immediately dismiss them as either a loony or someone trying to get you to sign something. At a party or social gathering, someone walking up to you to talk about aliens is novel, interesting, and can be a lot more fun than what is going on.

Its a very direct, close-ended question. The answer is either yes/no, and unless you're a social wizard its hard to spin something fun as an answer to such an abrasive question. Its like asking someone about their profession. Theres always a slight tinge of awkwardness to the question "what's your job? / what do you do for work? / what do you do for a living?"

If you have something worth saying, then send a message. I would never just cold message out of the blue saying, "hey what are you up to?".
