I can't even fathom the lack of self-awareness it would take to type something like that out and not realize what a vile person you are before you hit 'save'.

Yeah, this is why men fucking go into the rightoid extremist pipeline. The psychos who say shit like this see that as a win. They don't want us to join them and help them unite the working class and overthrow capitalism or anything, they want us to turn bad and validate their prejudices.

Same. I have a wonderful girlfriend but no regular friends who I'm able to see with any regularity and I feel at least as lonely now as when I was single but hanging out with people on a somewhat regular basis.

Fucking hell. Anyone who says stuff like that is more than just overzealous, if you say everyone with an immutable physical characteristic deserves to be lonely you're a psycho piece of shit.

It's not great but it's not enough to make HER right-wing overall is what I was saying. Not being perfect doesn't make her not worth listening to at all.

And post-Soviet Russia is basically the USSR distilled down to all its worst flaws with none of the good parts remaining. It doesn't make you a tankie to admit its collapse was objectively a disaster whatever you think of the country itself.

It's definitely that, plus the general escalation of gender war rhetoric.

Same, I'd never actually watched Hasan directly (only seen secondhand clips of him in other people's videos) but I'd gone from pretty neutral on him to actually starting to respect him a bit over the last couple months, but that clip of him in Shoeonhead's video ruined any goodwill I had towards him. I somehow thought he was better than buying into the absolute lowest-of-the-low cultural war shit like that. His 'critique' was one of the most mean-spirited and cruel of all the ones she showed too…

Genuinely, how so? I see people say this but I don't really see it. She still seems pretty firmly culturally-center left-populist to me. I'll admit she's been a little more mild in her criticism of Trump and ICE than I'd like but it's still clear she's definitely not a fan, and if that keeps her more right-wing fans watching her rather than moving on to someone who's actually conservative and will radicalize them more in that direction then so be it.

I'm a bit disappointed by the way he characterized the issue as "algorithms are making men lonely and insecure and then telling them the solution is hoarding wealth and resources", This is 100% true though. It's not the full story, but it's a not-insignificant part of it and I'm glad he actually specifies the algorithms and not just individual creators like people who blame the 'Manosphere' usually do.

Exactly, so teach everyone to understand and respect consent. Don't single out boys specifically and teach them that they're born morally inferior to girls, or dumber and more instinctual.

My racist mother thinks circumcision is "the white thing to do" so as to not "look like a Jew or a monkey." NOT being circumcised makes you 'look like a Jew'? ...does she know where the practice originated?

But the rest of society, or at least a large portion of it, rightfully denounces it when a man says something disgusting like that about women, rather than accepting or even applauding it and dogpiling on anyone who pushes back. That's the main problem, not the individual people who say awful things.

The 'blatantly communist' system that analyzes everything EXCEPT class through an oppressor-oppressed dynamic and has been extremely effective at dividing and distracting the working class? I don't think it originated from the CIA but they've definitely been amplifying it to drown out the more class-unifying rhetoric coming from other people.

People who consider themselves leftists rather than liberals are obviously more likely to be class conscious (although sadly it's not a guarantee) so in my experience they're more likely to be skeptical of overly divisive identity politics like this. They're far from immune to it of course, and I've definitely seen some pretty unhinged misandry coming from people who are solidly anticapitalist, but I think it's more common and widely accepted among the 'radlib' types (liberals who adopt revoluti…

The left as it exists in the mainstream now is divisive and really good at producing reactionaries that push back against the shit they receive from it. The FBI of the 60s could only have DREAMED of an anti-communist psyop as effective as the modern identitarian terminally-online left.

I'm a class-first leftist who's opposed to how the modern (American) left has been largely coopted by idpol purists who seem to downright enjoy alienating potential allies with unnecessarily inflammatory and divisive rhetoric. Their treatment of men's issues (and, well, boys and men themselves) is a particular concern to me because I know that if I'd been coming of age just a couple years later, I probably would've been pushed to the right by it myself and I have empathy for those growing up in …

And the child takes priority in that case with a 'right' to expect financial support from its parent. The child has a right to a decent upbringing, but there's no reason it has to come specifically from the father in a society with so much excess wealth. In cases where the father isn't in the picture, the state should be stepping in and helping the mother with subsidies and tax cuts, just as it should be in cases where the parents are together but still struggling financially. (Of course, more i…

The bigger double standard is that they often support having a strong social safety net EXCEPT in cases involving a mother and father who are no longer together, in which case suddenly it's a 'burden on the taxpayers' and they don't want to 'pay for your irresponsible choices', even though in every other case when conservatives are the ones making those arguments, they'll point out how keeping people out of poverty is good for society in general and we'll all indirectly benefit from it.

Physical biological differences (such as in average strength) obviously exist and shouldn't be ignored or denied. I do believe that there are probably some psychological differences as well, but that the way we're socialized from birth exaggerates those differences much of the time, and that it's highly unproductive to actually talk about whatever minor differences may exist, as it quickly devolves into just another gender war fight and inevitably includes a component of misandry regardless of w…

Sure, voters who support it because they believe it generally have some legitimate basis for their grievances and want to do what they think is the right thing, however misguided they may be about who or what is to blame or what the right thing is. A portion of them will able to be reached with the right arguments. The elites using it as a wedge know full well what they're doing and don't care about anyone but themselves. This goes for both conservatives and non-class-conscious liberals.

There's an important distinction to be made here between liberal voters who may agree with this stuff and the liberal politicians and other elites who are the main ones spreading it. For the latter, it's mostly the other way around: liberals love weaponizing idpol to keep the working class divided and guard against increasing development of class consciousness so that their own position is never threatened.

I really think they would rather risk everything and throw away any progressive movements so they can have either an oppressive male or a woman in charge in order to fulfill their "men are oppressors and women are inherently more peaceful/progressive" worldview. That wasn't the primary reason, the establishment pro-capital party leadership just wanted to stop Bernie at any cost and breaking up a diverse movement along identitarian lines is often an effective way to kneecap it. They tried smearin…

The problem with lefties is they don’t want to actually hear men out. Huh? Liberals are the ones who push divisive culture war/gender war shit to keep us distracted and will just laugh or tell us to pick ourselves up by our bootstraps if we mention men's issues. Leftists, even if they won't always agree with the framing, will see the underlying systemic problems causing those issues and agree that something needs to be done.

This is not my experience at all. Liberals are the ones primarily responsible to making this brand of misandry acceptable in the mainstream (i.e. pro-capitalist 'girlboss feminism', Clinton's infamous 'women are the primary victims of war' comment, that weird ad Obama made for Harris where he implied the only reason black men might not want to vote for her is because they're intimidated by a black woman in power). Rashida's always the main one who comes to mind for me when I try to think of who could be the successor, but I don't think there's a chance in hell that'll be possible. She's probably the most principled elected official in office right now and is one of the politicians I respect the very most and I'd absolutely support her, but if the establishment doesn't like Bernie they HATE her. Not over that, while the American 'left' definitely isn't good on men's issues it's less the actual politicians or people in power who are the problem and more the culture. The Democrats' continued support for Israel is what has me conflicted over voting for them, but I still probably will unless they do anything even worse than what they've bene doing in the next month.

I finally earned my first temp ban there about a month ago for a similar comment remarking on how the only really socially acceptable way for someone to show empathy for men or men's issues on the cultural left is if they frame it around how it would help women or society in general rather than just for its own sake. It definitely wasn't even the edgiest thing I'd commented there so I was surprised that was what did it.

Lol I finally earned my first temp ban there the other week for just pointing out that it's still generally not 'allowed' on the cultural left to express empathy for me just for their own sake, it always has to be justified with how it will help women or society in general. The normal public doesn't love ceo's because a lot of them are narcissistic, Conflating a job like CEO with an inborn trait is literally the exact same thing we criticize the 'Thin Blue Line' crowd for doing. a lot of people fear men because of the threat they impose due to their physical and patriarchal presence. I'll preface this by saying I do support legalizing prostitution, but purely as a necessary evil. Much like people making and selling hard drugs, it's something that's inevitably going to happen anyway so we might as well do what we can to regulate it and try to reduce the harm it causes as much as possible rather than ineffectually attempt to ban it and hurt people even more in the process. But I've always found the cultural left to be way too optimistic on sex work (I hate that term too, it se…

Most charitably, at least when I first started seeing it come up (specifically in the context of dating), it just means treat women you're interested in the same as you would anyone else rather than severely overthinking every single microinteraction and getting all awkward around them. It's all heavily downvoted so that's encouraging. It's the mass approval that comments like this tend to get that really bothers me more than the comments themselves. And I think that will be very empowering I'd say quite the opposite, that it would severely dehumanize us and codify a class distinction between men who are able to experience genuine intimacy and those who are deemed unworthy and have to pay for a computer program that everyone knows can't actually feel anything real and is faking it even more than a prostitute would be (and deep down you'd know too, even if you try to deny it).
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates29/04/23 10:08 PM

Exactly! It's the same with prostitution. If it was really only about sex, more incels would just go see a prostitute and there wouldn't be so many stories from them about how they had sex with one and it was super unfulfilling.

I always thought it felt really dehumanizing of men to suggest sex robots (or sex work) as a 'solution' of any kind to male loneliness, perpetuating the stereotype that we're just dumb animals who only feel horniness and failing to even consider the possibility that we can feel genuinely lonely and crave intimacy and social acceptance. Of course, it's absolutely essential to gain any legitimacy, and while men still hold more 'hard' institutional power overall, women have more 'soft'/social power, at least outside of more insular and conservative communities, and just as with the issues women face, men's issues are affected by both. I'd consider it huge progress if we can just overturn society's double standard about misandristic rhetoric, 'jokes', and body shaming (which I do think is starting to happen, very slowly).

I agree it's an essentially meaningless difference in practice and I don't doubt that in at least some of those cases, they only said 'deprioritize' instead of 'stop' to avoid running afoul of anti-discrimination laws, but still, when it's already an, er, highly controversial point we're making here, making exaggerations in the title that are clarified in the article is not going to help our case and will only feed the narrative that 'white men are making stuff up so we can feel oppressed'.

I think what they're talking about there are things like how the abortion debate is constantly being framed as a gendered issue, with men in general being blamed when the right to abortion is under attack, when in fact support/opposition to abortion correlates much more strongly with religiosity and general liberal/conservative political leanings than it does with …

Of course some men think stuff like that, but it's commonly used as a 'rebuttal' against men lamenting their loneliness at all, no matter how innocently.

That kind of talk is the reason I never really felt comfortable, or even truly accepted, in explicitly progressive spaces. What bothers me isn't so much when an individual person says it; of course it means they're someone I probably don't want to be friends with, but some people are just assholes and there's nothing we can really do about that. It's the way those comments are so often not just tolerated but downright encouraged and applauded by the broader community, and seeing them and the cla…

I don't know, something that's not used by pickup artists and a toxic hate sub to demean men who don't make enough money?

While I support legalizing sex work (like drugs, it's one of those things that's simply going to happen no matter what, so we might as well try to make it as safe as we can), I always thought it was a pretty demeaning answer to 'how to help men be less lonely'. Even if well-intentioned, it still operates on the idea that men only want sex. Sure, some people really are just horny and want sex with anyone they can get it from, but truly lonely men want companionship and love, and paying someone to…

Their entire comment operates on the bad faith assumption/trope that men only care about sex, not to mention the use of misandristic terms like 'low-value men'.

This right here, and this is what's so frustrating about some of the discourse around that article about the rise of single lonely men that's been circulating. That's essentially the conclusion it reaches but (for instance in the r/OutOfTheLoop thread today) lots of people are reading it and then blaming it on men individually rather than admitting that there's a major societal/systemic factor.

It really feels like there’s a bigger concern about being right than being helpful. This is exactly the driving force behind the extreme woke-ist types (not using that term like right-wingers do to mean anyone who doesn't put up with racism or is vaguely left-of-center, but to describe the people this post is about who focus their energy on aggressive language policing and minor culture war issues and seem to prefer pushing potential allies away to building bridges). When they overly inflammator…

Lots of people don't care about or understand things until they affect them or people close to them, unfortunately. We should be glad they're coming around to caring at all, not attacking them for not caring sooner. That just gets in the way of progress.

Exactly, I don't think it's her fault, she's saying it because she has to or she knows she'll be attacked. Just like how you need an 'I'm not a Trump supporter' disclaimer if you're going to criticize Democrats in any non-explicitely-leftist spaces.

Yeah, I don't think I heard it to excuse inappropriate sexual behavior until my late teens or twenties, and that definitely made me hate it even more, but I'd never once had a positive association with the phrase before then.

I always hated it because of how condescending it felt, the way it implied that boys/men are inherently dumber and are going to be immature forever.

I certainly don't think it's on the level of circumcision or banning abortion, but I agree it's unethical.

This is all part of the same 'girlboss feminism' culture she was talking about, she was just saying that Hillary served as a perfect personification of it. I doubt she'd disagree with anything you said here.

Another part of it is they don't take the social consequences of false accusations at all seriously. And yeah, your life won't be as ruined as it would be if you were sent to prison for years, but it could still be pretty damn ruined, and there's very little sympathy for that, or for the fear of it happening (even if it's statistically very unlikely).

I wouldn't say it's shifting, this sentiment has been around at least as long as I've been socially aware.

I wouldn't say the Bible itself teaches misandry, but the more traditional conservative/fundamentalist denominations of Christianity definitely do. It's not as severe or in-your-face as their misogyny, but it was their gender-essentialist BS that initially set me on the path of hating myself for being male when I was growing up. Their teachings around sexuality send the message that men are inherently more sinful than women and less in control of ourselves and that women are more spiritually 'pu…

And saying that you are involuntarily celibate implies that you think somebody owes you sex. I wouldn't really say that, all it means is that it's not your choice. Wishing something in your life that's out of your control was different doesn't necessarily mean you think you're entitled to it being different. But still, I do definitely think there's a difference between considering yourself 'involuntarily celibate' and being able to articulate what you mean like that, and making it your personali…

Yeah, of course it would've been the right thing for him to try and help, but definitely not the smart thing, and I could never blame anyone for not wanting to put themselves directly in harm's way by intervening in a dangerous situation like that (as long as it's not their job, if they were cops or something I'd absolutely blame them).

Of course, but not every man who can't get laid is an incel and this sub's mods' insistence that they are is weird and damaging. I couldn't agree more strongly that male virgins in general don't deserve to be shamed or treated as potentially dangerous, but trying to normalize the term 'incel' by applying it to nonradicalized men who don't self-identify it is not the solution. The term is already very firmly cemented in popular discourse as men who harbor near-terroristic misogynist views, with t…

I don't have a problem with making fun of actual incels, but the term definitely gets thrown around way too lightly. Just the other day I unsubbed from r/inceltears after there was a heavily upvoted post dragging this guy who simply made a comment about how he'd seemingly 'done everything right' (in good shape, had a good job, etc.) and yet was still a virgin, with no implications of misogyny or incel ideology, and everyone was assuming the worst.

What you want is a an actual leftist politician, like Bernie or someone even further left. The Democrats you're complaining about are mostly/all neoliberals, socially progressive but center-right in terms of economics.
