I don't think there's a rule or rigid pattern to it. Either sex can be one who compromised or the one who got lucky. Sometimes they both feel lucky. Whoever has the higher status may be liable to jump ship at the sight of better opportunity. Often discussions center around which sex is more liable to do this, but again I think a distinction is hard to draw.

I don't think men would have a problem with women getting rich as long as they find a way to maintain respect for their man. The wage gap is shrinking and may flip so that women make more money than men. If that happens then both sexes will have to alter their assumptions about a man's role. The RP men are probably just very skeptical that any such respect could be real or authentic when they look broke by comparison.

Very well put. As a man, it does sometimes feel unfair the amount of effort I have to put in to start attraction with a woman I'm interested in. Especially if it fails and I just feel embarrassed. On the other hand, women more often become attracted to me when they're not the direct object of my attention.
