We have a couple of electric space heaters for the rooms at the far end, like the bathroom. It's nice to be able to warm it up to take a shower comfortably. We also have an electric dryer and vent it into the house in winter. The moisture helps make up for the woodstove drying out the air. (My plants love the humidity!)

Close! A 50-year-old singlewide trailer. We did Tyvek it a few years ago when we (and when I say "we," I mean my boyfriend) installed the new windows and siding. Still gets a mite chilly, though!

Lol, we sleep in our living room to be closer to the woodstove.

Someone had commented on the unlikelihood of a WW3.

Have you looked at what's going on in Russia and Ukraine?

Add this to the fact many kids growing up today can't read or write and have been so damaged by their unstable, dysfunctional family lives that they'll never be able to support themselves. Our government-run schools (including the one I work for) are simply passing them from one grade to the next regardless of proficiency. By the time society as a whole recognizes how badly these kids are messed up, it will be too late.

I believe there was some sort of news story to the effect, although the source may have been unreliable. Trump is certainly guilty of not checking his sources. I don't believe that's indicative of mental illness, however. Speaking of the news, though, did you catch Mark Cuban on CSNBC saying that Harris' tax proposals if enacted would kill the stock market? Dunno about you, but my pension and retirement plan are invested in the market. Just something to think about.

Trump is Trump. He's spoiled on account of having been CEO of a private company for decades. He doesn't act like a politician; he acts like the businessman he is.

Well, let's hope not, because in most cases it would be a waste of money. People cheering over the government giving them $25,000 for a down payment do not understand the reason why there are down payments in the first plwce.

When the government reaches the end of its ability to borrow and spend trillions, we will have another Great Depression. I think we're about a decade out, maybe sooner if Harris gets elected.

It's late so I'll keep this brief and only hit a couple of points. First, let's dispense with the notion that poor widdle unions can't gain traction because the government is a big bad meanie! Study some labor history; do you think the government was nice when the WV National Guard was called out during the Battle of Blair Mountain, and bombs leftover from WW1 were dropped on striking miners? Do you think the government was kind 30 years later when Harry Truman (a Democrat) broke a strike by thr…

/r/PurplePillDebate06/09/24 02:55 AM

That's ironic, because the progressive "War on Poverty" in the 1960s did more to destroy unions than all of the club-wielding Pinkertons and National Guard reservists of earlier times. Welfare took men out of the family home. Men who work hard but come home to kids they still can't afford to feed will rise up and demand their fair share. But what happens when your kid is living with your baby momma and her new boyfriend across town? Democrats have been very careful to make sure people can feed t…

I think the problem is the working class have been coerced to believe the government will give them nice things if they're patient and vote blue (overlooking the fact Democrats are just as much in the pocket of the ruling class as Republicans are). The solution isn't government; it's unions and collective bargaining to wrest our fair share from our employers. That's how you get to a living wage and good working conditions.

Well, I must commend your grand vision! Many Americans struggle over small moral decisions, like whether to shoplift an item at the self-checkout, while you would steal ("nationalize") entire industries with an airy wave of your hand! Impressive.

I think some politicians gin up the culture war stuff because it's easier than addressing the other problems our country faces. Your average Republican cares a lot less about that stuff, and may even take a dim view of those tactics. Ron DeSantis didn't get much traction on the the national stage. Shifting gears a bit, how can you be s socialist who believes in free markets? Isn't that like being a vegetarian who enjoys a good steak?!

I have been bi for more than 40 years. I don't feel the need to march in any parades. I don't think my sexuality is anyone's business unless you're a good friend and/or I'm interested in sleeping with you. I'm not in the closet but I'm not flying a freak flag, either. I think the world would be a nicer place if we all kept our personal lives private in the workplace and at school, and focused on doing our jobs and learning how to read and do math. I think there is a danger in making Europe's tax climate attractive in comparison. I'm not sure many moguls would decamp to Third (or even Second) World countries, but Britain? Germany? Ireland? Hmm.

Tax increases are likely to send the super-rich (who have an outsized impact) running to tax shelters and will almost certainly affect the market, and not in a good way. I've moved some of my own money off the table but I can't do much about my TSP, 403b and pension. I'm not terribly worried about the anime, lol.

And a Democrat replaced it with the strikingly similar ESSA. It's funny how nearly everyone in education dislikes it when the feds stick their noses into public education and start telling teachers what to do, but when Trump called for eliminating the Department of Education, the same people didn't like that, either!

Prada bags don't exist? How does this work exactly? Are people forbidden to buy and sell nice things? Who gets to decide what is or isn't allowed? And as far as "Most people can't afford housekeepers," in your scenario, some people are working for wages while others are serving as housekeepers and child-tenders. My assumption is that the wage-earners would be supporting the domestic workers. No? The only difference I can see is that a housekeeper works for a fee negotiated in advance which is ev…

Maybe you should think about becoming a Republican.
/r/PurplePillDebate31/08/24 01:14 AM

I don't know why it's assumed we need more people. In 1970, the population was around 200 million--a third smaller than it is today--yet things were humming along.
/r/PurplePillDebate31/08/24 01:12 AM

This sounds nice but who decides how financial resources are allocated? If the childcare person decides she wants a Prada bag and money to get her nails done, do you fork it over cheerfully? What if you were planning to spend it on a nice treat for yourself? Incidentally, these sorts of inherent conflicts are probably why most people would prefer to hire a housekeeper rather than forming a commune.
/r/PurplePillDebate31/08/24 01:08 AM

Birth control, also child labor laws.
/r/PurplePillDebate31/08/24 12:59 AM

They had to destroy the married working-class family in order to break the unions. They had to get men out of the home so they wouldn't fight to earn enough to support their family. Pulling women into the workforce to replace them was advantageous as women work cheaper and are more compliant. We used welfare to accomplish these ends until the 1990s, when it became possible to outsource more work overseas thanks to the Internet. The working class has been in freefall ever since.
/r/PurplePillDebate31/08/24 12:58 AM

Whenever I read stuff like this, I wonder ... why not have a kid then babysit two or three others? Instant playmates for your child and a paycheck all rolled into one.
/r/PurplePillDebate31/08/24 12:51 AM

I have never met a Republican who wants to end public schooling, we just want it to be GOOD! When a school is spending $18,000 per pupil and only half the kids can read proficiently, something is very, very wrong. It's not enough to trot out the same ineffective lessons year after year and 'pass' students even when they can't do the work.
/r/PurplePillDebate31/08/24 12:47 AM

Another concern is highly-educated women dropping out of the workforce to raise families. Recently I read that a significant percentage of female doctors work only part-time. As the number of residencies is already capped at an artificially low number, having some of the doctors who do make it through the pipeline work less than anticipated further contributes to the shortage.

I knew a couple who struggled with fertility issues. The woman miscarried her first set of ivf twins. Then she had a second healthy pair. Six years later at age 41, she conceived naturally. Surprise surprise!

It's been my experience that most men aren't really all that interested in having kids. I've been told (by men) that it's usually something they go along with because their wife wants 'em and they want to make her happy. I'm childfree, so men tell me this kind of stuff, much in the same manner that some women will tell me that they regret having had some of their kids. (I think they assume I won't sit in judgment.)

The prevailing sentiment during the time I worked there (some year ago) was that every birth was celebrated because it represented a continuation of the tribe, its survival. This belief was beginning to be tempered by the realization that a growing population meant smaller casino profit-sharing checks, but at the time, the solution was viewed as, "I want to disenroll that family I don't get along with," and not, "I want fewer grandchildren."
