I'm really short, & my weight fluctuates up & down within a 10-pound range pretty frequently. One co-worker who had been trying to date me actually followed me out to my car to tell me, "I would try harder to get you to go out with me if you could just stay skinny." We did not go out.

I'm sorry you're experiencing this sad fact of human nature (emphasis on the "man" part). You have so much to be proud of & so much to share, and it's frustrating to realize that the very passions that make you YOU are in some ways a stumbling block to the other things you want out of life. The good news is, those supposed stumbling blocks are doing a lot of your vetting for you. I've got two masters, a good corporate job with an impressive-sounding title (the work itself isn't so glamorous, tho…

I work in insurance & am doing a study of our client base. The SHEER NUMBER of old- & middle-aged men who begin our conversation by saying, "Do hhwhaaat, now?," & repeat that ad nauseam, is staggering. I actually bought a microphone to make my voice louder, thinking it was a softness issue - until I listened to recordings & realized no, even from across the room I can hear & understand myself clearly even un-enhanced. For funzies, I had my man make just a few calls for me, using his Man Voice. T…

As a white-passing Latina I had similar interaction with cops when my boyfriend at the time was too drunk to function & I, admittedly having had a few but still able to function & under the legal BAC limit to drive, was trying to walk him home safely when he didn't want to leave the bar. At first they were relatively helpful to me, until he shot his shot. This drunk man told the cops, "She's Latina, she's hot-blooded," & both officers laughed & told him "good luck with [me]." I was then on my ow…

For the first time in my life I'm dating someone whose politics align with mine and it is SO much better this way. We're both active in our communities & share the same beliefs about how to help our town & neighbors, and he supports me wholeheartedly in the neighborhood revitalization efforts I had started before I ever met him. I can't tell you how nice it is to be able to make an off-hand remark without being Devil's Advocate'd to death - and when we DO disagree it's so much more interesting b…

I know a couple that actually made this work! The man had a school bus that he was renovating himself, owned it outright, & had learned everything he could to be able to do most maintenance & repairs himself on. The woman he began dating halfway through his project hated her job and was willing to ditch it & come traveling with him sooner, but he wanted to wait to be sure this was what she really wanted. She was actually worried for a bit that he wasn't that into her & was putting her off becaus…

I ordered a sheer one with marabou from etsy two years ago but was so disappointed in it! It dropped fluffies like crazy & the seams were really scratchy, AND the shop had closed permanently by the time I realized how unhappy I was with it. 😬 I remember paying a bit more than $50 for it, so if you go for it I'd aim at a higher price point for better luck than I had! (Aren't they just gorgeous, though?!?)

I love silk robes, kimonos, peignoirs, caftans..... Always have! I've lived with other men in the past who were indifferent at best to what I wore around the house, but my current man is SO into me swanning around in clothes I love that are genuinely comfy. It really feels like we both win, because I keep on wearing what I love & he loves getting to see me in it. When he was so openly appreciative of how I look in them I wondered if I was being performative about it, or just doing what I "should…

I'm very short, so even a fluctuation of 10 lbs is the difference of at least a size, or often two. It is truly incredible how differently men respond to me at size 2 versus size 6; at my smallest, the comments, leering, following, & catcalling doubles, easily. Older men especially seem to be unable to keep their words & hands to themselves when my body looks "how it should" from society's crappy view. I wonder if I seem frailer, more vulnerable, less able to protect myself? When my weight goes …

Thank you for this list! I had been feeling a little bad that I recently allowed the man I'm seeing to pick me up from a friend's house last week. (I was more intoxicated than I meant to be since I've been fasting for hormone balancing, & my usual number & type of drinks hit me like a freight train.) I worried he would see me differently since I was so chatty & hyper & clearly happy-tipsy when her picked me up, but he actually thanked me the next morning for "letting him come get me" - he told m…

I met a man at work who immediately checked all the boxes for being "a great guy" in the sense that I set him up with two of my good fellow-FDS friends. Neither of those matches worked out (I later learned that he was too focused on me to pursue my friends), but right about the same time that my relationship with a LVM deteriorated we both sort of went through our own "glow ups" personally, professionally, & physically. We had always taken walks & coffee breaks together, but he started showing u…

I've been on the flip side of this so many times as an auto claims adjuster - while I'm not physically on the shop, I DO spend the majority of my workday immersed in estimates & photos. I would not know how to fix a vehicle, but I can spot a "good" estimate and a "bad" one in a 30-second read. It's always astounding to me how many WOMEN want a call from "the real adjuster".... It was a source of frustration & feelings of inadequacy, but when I voiced this to a make co-worker, he offered to take …

Love your point about making sure we celebrate the moments in our lives that are fully within our control! A dear friend just became a single mother by choice through IVF & we are celebrating her triply: for her coming-soon bundle of joy, for the success of her medical fertility help, & for the fact that she worked hard enough to save enough money to drop to part-time consulting work until baby is in kindergarten & she'll feel better about going back full-time. This is ALL celebration-worthy, & …

My grad placement came with the AMAZING perk of getting to audit any class in any field just for the sake of well-rounded-ness, & as a c-PTSD diagnosed individual I was so excited to take a 400-level psychology class on treating women's trauma. The students were so underwhelming, so disengaged.... I didn't want to speak up too often since it was their major & not mine, but it was genuinely kind of horrifying to realize that these are the psychologists a child of mine might see one day. At the en…

Thank you for this insightful post - I've been struggling with the idea that I didn't "earn" my (so far, seemingly so genuinely great) potential HVM because he literally landed in my life when I wasn't ready, respected my initial "no," left me perfectly quietly alone, but was there & ready to spend time getting to know each other the same night I reached out to him after 6 months of silence from both parties. I don't feel like I deserve him. I'm so used to having to "earn" anything of value that…

I really resonate with your story & the resentment that comes from feeling like all the trappings of femininity were somehow off-limits to you - I'm trying my best to learn now, but feel so far behind I'll never catch up. I do feel so much better when my hands are pretty, though, & since we're talking about nails here - the "ImPress" brands in the nail care aisle of CVS/ Wal-Mart / Walgreens / etc is excellent! They are the stick-on type, but the adhesive is part of the nail so there's no glue t…

How precious is it that this system was so natural, so DEFAULT for him, that he instinctively uses it to explain something as complex as inflation? Love to your gramps (& your gram, who sounds like she was quite a catch too!) 💕

Refinishing cabinets is honestly super doable - you can try starting with a small end table or a box with a similar paint / varnish on it as a practice piece to help with nerves before permanently modifying your cabinets! Same goes for flooring - the first time I laid wood flooring I intentionally bought an extra box knowing I'd mess something up, & started in a closet so i could hide any errors while getting practice with corners. There are so many genuinely helpful YouTube videos, even old epi…

I'm up to my eyeballs remodeling a gorgeous-but-massive Victorian foursquare, so that pretty little baby is gonna get a workout! I'm hiring much of the heavy lifting done (plumbing/ electrical/ drywall), but it's a great opportunity for me to get better at trimming, and hopefully building some custom bookcases & other storage pieces too. My mud room is my test room - if I can do alright in that utilitarian room that only I really have to see, I'll feel better doing the rest of the house (& save …

Thank you so much for your kindness! It never gets easier, you just get better at living with it, as cliche as that saying is. To your second point - it's honestly astounding how tightly gym culture has become bound up with TRP/ PUA/ LVM culture. Gyms have always been hyper-masculine, of course, but this new breed is truly something new. I'm sorry men have also chosen to single you out at moments when they think you're "weak" - for all their talk of being alpha predators, it sure is telling how …

Oh girl!! My partner & I ran a Crossfit / boutique fitness hybrid gym for a hot minute six years ago, & it was DISGUSTING how many over-swole roiders popped out of the woodwork after my ex's sudden death. One bro had the absolute audacity to message me on the gym's page less than a month after my man's passing to tell me that he was sorry for my loss but he really thought he could - direct quote - "take my body to the next level." I didn't respond to a tactless tone-deaf neg like that, but it di…

And PSA that some of us may not have considered - Lowe's, Home Depot, Menards, etc all have great Christmas sales on power tools going on right now, but if you can find the corner of the store dedicated to "open box" merch, that's where the real gems can hide! It's often on an endcap near the returned cabinets / appliances. I just snagged a $500 Dewalt table saw for $270 & am PUMPED! 💪💖💅

RIGHT?!? I went through five (male) contractors before I found one that I can rely on to show up on time, treat me with basic respect, & invoice me fairly / accurately. Teams of women, on time, on top of it, building a well-deserved great reputation? Honestly, when I think of the friends & family I know who've hired contractors for any kind of reno work.... In most of the cases the work has been lead & initiated by the female homeowner. (Because, you know, we care about having beautiful, safe ho…

The more I look into this concept of female-owned & operated businesses, the more I realize.... This is a serious opportunity I'm so many ways. Tradeswomen getting more business withoutthe side of sexism? Women hiring contractors they can trust? Growth of small businesses in general (& during a recession to boot?) Y'all are giving me so, so much to consider right now. 😊

That would be so, so simple, & so, so helpful! Do you know if there any kind of petition or movement to start this? I'm googling now, but can't find anything to that effect. You'd think it would be so simple.... But no.

Preach!! I'm currently stalking the after-Christmas sakes at the big box stores to find deals on tool sets to make first-time homebuyer presents for my two girlfriends who are closing on their first homes in early 2021. I'm remodeling my big old dream home & am always happy to loan my bigger tools to women who need them, or go help thrm start their own projects with the knowledge I've gained in this process - but there is something SO satisfying about giving a fellow woman what she needs to fix …

I'm in the middle of remodeling my dream home & had a very similar situation to the author's gas leak story - I grew up in a family of tradesmen & knew from my first walk-through of the home that the bones were good but the huge structure would sag in the center without a new support wall being constructed, as the original support wall was compromised by poor work in earlier renos. I've been through five contractors & have had to fire every one that does not see what I see when I take them to th…
