The high school I went to was mediocre and most alumni as far as I've connected with on fb are in low paid jobs. The power dynamic is also more favourable - and there is always a power dynamic. People know not to piss off the group leader because he exerts the most authority in a friendship group, he has the ability to exclude you and that is an association of fear which makes you more motivated to maintain a healthy relationship with that person. If someone wants to prove they're good at driving, they have to drive a car well to demonstrate their competence. I wouldn't say I have low self esteem at all - I enjoy the fruits of my labour. I understand what you mean but in a capitalist culture, which as you correctly state prioritises the accumulation of things, makes people more competitive, there will always be winners and losers. It is in my experience that a few dominate and reap the rewards of the top, lets say 20% of people, while the other 80% are the average.
