The Taliban had little to nothing to do with 9/11?! Whatever you say buddy... OK, "Little to nothing" is hyperbolic. Sorry, when all the government does is lie its hard to keep it straight when a little truth slips out. The Taliban were already our enemies (largely because of US foreign policy) and we were itching for an excuse to fight them. Al-Qaeda was the group who were responsible for the attacks. None of the hijackers were from Afghanistan. Most of the were from Saudi Arabia. Yes, the Tali…

Do you not remember how the Afghan war started? Yeah, Bush used a horrible tragedy as an excuse to start a war that had little to nothing to do with said tragedy. It’s not like we went over there because of their fabulous wealth. There is a country with fabulous wealth that can be exploited for war-profits though- the good old US of A. Let get that 'defense' budget up to 3/4 of a Trillion dollars eh? Those military contractors aren't going to get ridiculously wealthy on their own now are they. I…

Bad experiences often cause people to get depressed- this is normal, healthy and most importantly- temporary. They don't normally cause Depression™. If the experience is bad enough, it can cause PTSD which comes with depression. That may have actually caused part of my problem, though genetics definitely played a role. The point is something like society not treating men like sex objects isn't (usually) enough to cause PTSD, and OP's post is ridiculous for trying to claim that is the reason the …

I have been struggling with suicidal depression for years, and while I certainly understand someone with depression feeling this way- I can say for sure that this isn't the reason that men have depression. People often mistake 'being depressed' as in the perfectly healthy and normal mood a person might get into after something bad happens in their life (which is what this kind of thing might fall into) and clinical depression which is a whole other beast. I wish there was another word to describ…

It's been this way for a while. Any little excuse to feel oppressed, the same criticism they accuse others of, usually by people who actually are oppressed. It's shit like this that no one takes MRA's seriously, and won't as long as it stays like this. Pathetic.

What do you think privilege means in this context? I'm not sure you actually want to know the answer, but at any rate I'm not the best person to ask. Make a thread in /r/askwomen and see what they have to say. If you only ask men in /r/mensrights or wherever your going to get a skewed view.

Why is it a problem that we didn't expect women to stay in the kitchen? Yes, the more enlightened sections of society no longer expects that of women, but I live in a "Red State" and there absolutely are men and women who think that way. Not to mention plenty of other countries where that is the norm. What used to be considered "Manly" is changing too. Not saying we don't still have a ways to go. We absolutely have privledges women don't, pretending otherwise is a myopic view.

In regards to what? This topic? I think /u/ADavidJohnson already explained it pretty well. Society expecting men to stoically deal with life's hardships (which some would argue isn't even a bad thing) makes it so men cannot express themselves fully without having their masculinity questioned. Which is bad. Society expecting women to stay in the kitchen makes women little more then the servants of men. Which is, I believe, objectively worse. They're both still bad but men are 'privileged' in that…

My point is that you are not listening to what /u/dfinkelstein is telling you. He is saying "I am taking away these people power to manipulate me by ignoring their attempts to manipulate me." You keep hearing "I am accepting these peoples manipulation." I didn't say there wasn't a difference between "Want" and "Expect" I am saying for dfinkelsteins purposes vis-à-vis ignoring these peoples attempts to manipulate him, functionally the difference is moot.

I agree with you, and it's good to recognize that we as men are privileged, but at the same time you could probably point out another group that has it worse in any given "Mens Rights" discussion. I also think that people around here would achieve their goals quicker by working with feminists to find common ground than pretending they are all extremists and "The Enemy". I don't really consider myself an MRA and posts with "Drops a massive Red Pill" in the title are one of the main reasons why.

I haven't read the article, but I agree with it the way it was worded in the thread title. What "Stay in the Kitchen" and "Man Up" have in common is theme, not severity. It's not "literally" equal because they are two different concepts (apples and oranges), the are 'equivalent' because they share a theme (fruit). Stay in the kitchen = This is what I expect you to do because of your gender. Man Up = This is what I expect you to do because of your gender.

I want to you pay for dates. I expect you to pay for dates. /u/Dfinkelstein either will or will not pay for dates if he pleases. What they expect is also what the want. That's his point, it doesn't really matter if they want it and/or expect it, it boils down to the same thing. Saying "That expectation isn't innocuous, and removing the manipulative part is basically just accepting it." sounds like almost the exact same thing as saying he has "Internalized his oppression."

They have just as much worth as a human being. They could educate themselves and become more enlightened. You never know how people will change with time. Everyone deserves a chance at redemption. I'm sure you've held some ignorant beliefs at one point, and you later updated your stance as you grew more wise. It's just as possible for a bigot to change as well. One thing that probably won't make a bigot change is just straight calling them a piece of shit, pretending we are better than them. The…

I criticize feminism. That's not misogyny. You criticize feminism in a misogynistic way, that is misogyny. Blatant lie. I contradicted your claim that "Women had been treated as property pretty much as long as civilizations have been around." And I cited evidence from one of the earliest civilizations showing that they did in fact treat women as property. You shouldn't have far to look if you have but eyes to see. Take for example this winner in this very thread. He makes the claim that women were never treated as property and that women who have the audacity to demand equal treatment with men are equivalent to 'ethnic cleansers who vilify the people they oppress'. That's pretty cut and dry, drank the cool-aid, dyed in the wool hateful misogyny right there. It's a long read but there are some real gems, so it's worth the read imho. Some highlight…

Part: The second Yes, and if it was only the former I'd have no problem. But it isn't. Actually that is exactly what it was. Or are you saying men historically, deliberately keeping women as slaves - their own mothers, sisters, daughters - can be explained without men being somehow evil or broken? I'd be very interested in how you concoct a worldview from that. That is exactly what I am saying. It's maybe relatively easy (if more than a little myopic) to look at how men treat their Mothers, Sist…

Part: The first It is possible that I'm uninformed on an individual example you might bring up. That doesn't contradict what I said though. Actually, since the foundations of feminism is the topic we are discussing, and since you accused me about being uninformed about the subject, and since you appear to me ignorant of one of the seminal thinkers of the movement it kind of does. It literally is just an anecdote. It's just one individual. I doubt you'd accept me pointing to an feminist who vilif…

Even if it's true, it's just an anecdote What do you mean, "Even if it's true"? Is it possible you are uniformed, as you accused me of being? It's funny how me citing the works of one of the founding philosophers of that movement is 'only an anecdote' yet you are about to cherry pick one quote, from one feminist declaration, from one convention and that constitutes 'proof'. Mary Wollstonecraft (one of the earliest supporters of women's rights, and considered one of the 'founding philosophers' of feminism very much was an egalitarian, at least as far as equality between the sexes is concerned. Her writing didn't 'vilify' men, it merely pointed out that inequalities exist (access to education, voting rights etc). At the time, women had no where near "Equal Rights" so pointing it out was merely speaking truth. A true egalitarian would not have a problem with this. "Fi…

One of my first posts was even defending MensRights against claims of misogyny. I was quickly proven wrong by the community however. I think that you might be spending a little too much time in the echo chamber that is "Men's Rights". You say that you enjoy the company of women that you actually know, but you are starting to hate "the idea of women." Do you not see the incongruity there? The reality is that the vast majority of women don't hold the views that radical feminists hold, and only the craziest radfems are even close to the straw man "Feminazi's" that are the enemies of this sub. Similarly, the majority of men do no…

I'm not saying that you should encourage the behavior, but depending on the circumstances I don't think an automatic jail sentence is always the answer. No, they are implying that if a person has consensual sex and then afterwards decides that they didn't want to have done that, then it isn't rape. In this case, the girl had consensual sex. There is proof of said act on video and she is still able to accuse the guy of raping her. That is not okay.

Nothing, you can skip that because I already know why. Now, please point out any and all ad hominems arguments I made. You though, seem fond of them, I bet you'll use one in this very post. You seem to (incorrectly) believe that making sinister insinuations about your opponent is an effective argumentative technique. What'…

But legally, they should have a lot more to do with physical maturity than raw age. How would you set it by 'physical maturity'? Is a girl who just got her period fair game? What traits on a male would signify that they are sexually mature? I have no problem requiring people wait until they are 16 or 17 (the most common ages of consent in North America) to have sex. Of course, I don't think kids should get in trouble for having sex with each other, so yeah it isn't perfect, but if it keeps 'grow…

A person underage is clearly capable of giving consent. Capability is simply being able to do something. The ability to say "yes" or "no" is sufficient to be able to give consent. Obviously, that's why I specified "Informed Consent". We are talking about the legal ability for a child to give consent, which they lack. The fact that "[w]e" (who?) do not let kids do certain things is meaningless. It's meaningless until your ass ends up in jail for fucking little kids, then I guess it has some meani…

Well, it seemed like a fairly reasonable position when I first read it, but I decided to research the facts of the case before making a decision. I bet a lot of the upvotes are from people who didn't do that. At least I got to read this article and discover what may be a new favorite person. This Wendy McElroy lady seems to have her head screwed on straight, now I'm curious to know more about her.

The idea behind statutory rape is that the child isn't capable of giving informed consent. This isn't a strange idea, we restrict what children can do until they are 'adults' for a very good reason. They aren't capable of making informed choices. We don't let kids drive cars, drink alcohol, smoke cigars, hold public office or serve in the military. They may want to drink, smoke, lie, or kill but we don't trust they will do those things 'responsibly'. I'm not saying that the law is perfect or per…

I can see how a person could have been legitimately afraid in that situation. Personally, I'd be more afraid of a mugging than rape, since total stranger rape is really rare, but I could see being afraid. What I can't see is blaming someone who was acting in a perfectly acceptable fashion. The guy almost certainly wasn't trying to sneak up on her, he was probably just walking normally and she wasn't paying attention to her surroundings. I love Skepchick's take on the matter. If I were tasked with writing a parody of a Skeptchick article about this issue I couldn't have have written a funnier or more ignorant piece of blather. My favorite joke from the article: "But don’t forget that just because a few people in the US and Down Under (snorf!) remove their body hair, the vast majority of people have intact lady gardens." Anyone, male or female, should be allowed to dress in "sexy" clothes, they should be allowed to flirt without expecting to get raped. You should also be able to flash money around without expecting to get mugged. Are either of those things wise in this day and age? That is debatable, but it is a whole different question than is it okay to have consensual sex and then call it rape. The answer to that is obviously no. It just seems odd to throw that in there. I don't know. I do know that the studies done that show that women get paid 80% less than men take into account things like qualifications, education and time on the job. Are you suggesting that maybe women are just naturally shittier at their jobs than men and that makes the wage discrepancy justified? This whole thing is stupid. Yes, I realize that its a 'joke', but this is a stupid battle to fight. Most normal feminists (i.e. the ones that support equality between the sexes) want equal pay for men and women at the same job. The issue isn't that men make more than women overall, it's that when they do the same job, they get paid less. So the whole idea of saying "Well little miss, if you all were capable of doing the same jobs as us big, strong,manly-men you would get paid as much." is in err…

No, his logic was faulty. If the women can't pass the requirements that are the exact same as men I don't think many people would complain that we were being unfair to the women.
