Look at it this way. You asked why companies would employ anyone who needed time off. Answer: because everyone eventually needs time off - the same reason most companies offer health benefits to employees. Employers pay 6-$20k a year on top of your pay for employees to have insurance so they don’t get sick and die or leave the company to go work somewhere that does value their intellectual contributions enough to offer health benefits.

My company, and others I have worked for value the intellectual contributions of the women and men who work there, regardless of whether they need to take time off for a baby, illness, or whatever. Even if in the short term profits at the top increase due to the exclusion of women in the workforce, ultimately you’ve just cost yourself a fortune because now you have to pay one male employees 2x their initial salary, instead of getting two workers for half price each. That is the business case.

Women get 70 on the dollar because they have babies over their lifetime and miss work because of it. We don’t have paid parental leave (for guys either which sucks!), so there is most of your 70% right there and this could be solved by paid parental leave. I think the fallacy is to equate any particular structure of life between men and women in families with happiness or good life outcomes. What matters is: is there mutual love, respect, and happiness in the household. You can’t get any of those things by mandate. Marriage is falling apart because it’s social utility is anachronistic.
