I had to tag it as something. Sorry I got it wrong.

You don’t have to debate me, but I’d ask that you keep my post in mind the next time you read something by someone who can’t get a relationship writing what they think someone who can get a relationship is thinking or what their motivations are.

It’s gotta come from within. I’ve always been successful with women but in terms of compliments from women who weren’t my partner? I’m holding onto like a half dozen that I’ve gotten over decades.

I moved from NYC where it’s quite common to see large age-gap relationships, to Denmark where there are far fewer of those relationships on display. The income gap is not as big between the wealthy and the poor and there’s a robust social safety net. It’s anecdotal but after a year and a half observation I wonder if there’s any correlation between the precariousness of living standards and these types of relationships.

It’s a balancing act. In my first marriage my partner and I had tons of shared interests but few shared values. I remarried, and while I don’t have as many shared interests the value overlap is much greater and we can build a new set of activities & interests based on the agreement that we’re gonna grow old together.

Are you a person with no close friends or family members?
/r/PurplePillDebate28/05/23 05:39 PM

We’re having a conversation and while I welcome your questions, my words mean what they mean. Not the rigid interpretations you rephrase them into.

No. That’s not at all what I meant. A guy who has multiple healthy relationships with friends, family, and even a professional would y r two distinct advantages in a relationship. First they’re likely to be carrying around fewer bottled up emotions. They’re likely more able to express themselves in a healthy way that is not alienating and with multiple options to talk their partner need not be their primary sounding board. Second, if a guy has the above mentioned people in his life it’s possible…

I’ve seen more than enough be post where a guy laments a common debacle. He’s in a relationship and the girl wants him to open up, and for the first time in his life he lets loose with all his fears, anxieties, and emotions. The girl gets either spooked, or turned off and he guy interprets this to be punishment for finally revealing his emotions. I’d posit that this debacle has less to do with him revealing his emotions and more to do with a longer history of not regularly being expressing them …

Since this is a CMV post I’d like to hear whether the pushback you’ve gotten has made you rethink any aspect of your view. Personally I think there’s way more nuance to interpersonal relationships than the rather black or white theory you’ve got. Consider whether it’s a general dating scenario, casual or curious parter, versus a long term commitment. I can see money and status having more weight in each scenario but with different types of women. Some value security that money affords, others va…

It was helpful in my experience, I’ve got a younger sister. Hearing about how young street harassment started was a reality check. Beyond her own experience I’d hear about her friends, their relationships, personal struggles, and the complex realities about their lives made me less likely to believe myths about how easy women have it.

How is it even a competition? Don’t mistake self gratification and hobbies as a substitute for an interpersonal or reciprocal relationship.

I said initially that were part of the same social circle. It’s entirely possible that she just wasn’t attracted to me and I was being offered a spot I. The friend zone.

It’s so important to be honest with yourself and the women you approach in this situation. When I was a college freshman I had a hug crush on a sophomore, our social circles overlapped and one day I gathered the courage to ask her out. She accepted but in a friendly way, so I clarified that I was asking her on a date. She said her schedule was too busy for dating but we could hang with a group of friends. I said “I already have a lot of friends,” and declined to join them. It was really hard to …

I have not found this to be the case. In America where health insurance is tied to employment, people with kids often likely to stay at a job for that stability and proximity to schools and community. While single people could work longer hours, they also have less obligations tying them down to a particular job and can more easily leave for better opportunities in a bigger geographic radius.

I used to work in back offices and in talking with HR people there is a soft feeling that being married is a positive trait. It implies that at least one person in the world trusts you. I can see the adoption of a robot companion being a cause for skepticism. Merited or not.

I’d like to second this emotion. Contrasting strengths/attributes combined with shared values made my second marriage 10x better than my first. On a surface level my first wife and I had lots in common regarding the way we liked to enjoy ourselves. But having similar taste doesn’t mean having shared goals or the ability to face the future together. When online dating at the time I met my now-wife, I searched terms that I’d never use to describe myself. As a young man I didn’t realize that what I…

It required some safe ground rules. Agree ahead of time that there will be no sexual activity the first time you meet, which should be in public, during the daytime.

In NYC, craigslist pre-2008 was amazing. One interesting quirk is that I had very little success contacting women because even back then I t was similar to OLD: tons of guys approaching women. However, I found way more success posting as a guy looking for a woman. First, not everyone posted face pics, so if you had the guts to put yourself out there, you had a massive advantage in terms of people clicking on your posting. Second, I learned that being specific about what I wanted/offered in my po…

I always interpreted working on oneself as to focus on areas needing improvement, becoming more a well rounded person. What you’ve listed are more like hobbies and skills.

Relationships are not exclusively transactional. Sometimes they’re partnerships that hep each other achieve things together that are beyond the grasp of either person alone.

Imagine how you treat other men in day to day life, at the grocery store, at work. It’s reasonable that women with no sexual interest in you/them treat men similarly.

If you are honest and putting that out there, it’s entirety possible to meet someone who shares those values. I married for a short time to a woman who was happy to indulge in that kind of life.

A better question might be what do you want out of a partner? While there are conventional ideas about gender roles, not everyone can conform to them. I’m an artist and would likely not be able support a wife and kids financially. But I did have good parenting role models and when I was dating I made it clear that I’d be able to contribute significantly cooking and taking care of kids. On top of that I’ve always tried to date women smarter than me with better careers. Being up front about what I…

I learned the hard way in my first marriage that focusing too much on personal gratification led to a relationship that catered too much on desire and pleasure but wasn’t capable of planning for it the future. After our divorce I did a 10 day meditation retreat to get my head together and came out looking for a partner who was compatible not just today but someone with whom we could build the rest our lives together. I’m with my partner not solely because of physical compatibility. We each have …

I'd go so far as to say emotional intelligence is a core component of the nebulous characteristcs of charisma and confidence. "it's a well-known fact that women couldn't give less of a shit about emotional intelligence in men if they tried." That's not a fact.

Acknowledging that a lot of women point out the need for emotional intelligence, and then dismissing it by saying “that can’t be true” is in itself a low emotional intelligence move.

I’m in one of those marriages where my wife earns significantly more than me. While data is useful in observing larger trends and dynamics, it’s got a way of obscuring or glossing over how every relationship has its own unique qualities that affect whether or not it succeeds.

50/50 years implies a me/you relationship, but to be a family means transitioning to we/us. Life with kids, especially small ones is full of non-monetary contributions and sacrifices. Your time becomes infinitely more valuable than dollars. The rewards are also incalculable, they can’t be measured they are lived.

I read a woman’s take on the friend zone that opened my eyes to the other side of the dynamic. She called it being put in the “fuck zone,” meaning this person is willing to pantomime friendship but has other designs on the relationship.

Be been to therapy three times, each stretch for about ten sessions. Once was for career, the other two for marital help. Each time it was to get behavioral tools to develop positive actions regarding personal challenges that were emotionally difficult. Not every therapist is the right fit and it took a couple tries to find them.

That worked consistently for me to meet and start relationships, even my first marriage. However it's not a terribly sustainable approach because it's based on good times, and I can share the good times with a variety of people. Post-divorce I took on the perspective of "Date for Good, Marry for Bad" In a life partner relationships we're going to get old, bury our parents, have kids and experience their medical woes (I've seen one broken bone and one surgery already by the time they were six y/o…
