The last name is the family name, as such it shows the continuation of a lineage. As for the kids going to mothers mostly, this based on the old-world view that the woman will take care of the child as the men were often going to war. This created the view that the mother is the better option to care for the child. As such, this view has been carried across the eons and is still prevalent in modern society.
