My wife and I dated in high school, 40 years ago. We literally grew up and older together. Besides the initial attraction, I was very happy at how she was not anything like my mother and her family was peaceful and loving. My parents (BPD/BiPolar mom) (alcoholic stepfather), were the example to me of what NOT to be like. A lot of my learned survival tactics, were just that, for survival. It took therapy, plus military training and just growing up, to learn new skills. My wife and I do not drink …

How is that?

This is not how a healthy and happy marriage works. Where I am weak, my wife is strong, and vice versa. In certain things, she takes the lead, because in those situations, she has more insight, education or is practically in the driver's seat. In other situations, I take the lead. Being in a happy and healthy marriage, means being "US" not she and I, if that makes sense. No one spouse should be dominant in all things.

This is not something that only women have, men can be like this too. For many, it stems from growing up in a dysfunctional and/or abusive household. For men, it is termed "White Knight Syndrome". I was the peacemaker in my family, groomed that way growing up in a family that was horrible. It took me years to learn to mitigate and manage that and not get drawn into relationships with people who I instinctively felt I could save or help. Luckily my wife is stable, emotionally and physiologically.…

Generalizations are typically not productive. All women are not the same in beliefs, looks, aspirations, desires, morals or intellect, etc. Same as all men are not the same. In my experience, it is better to judge each person as an individual, not a representative of a grouping. There are woman who are greedy, as there are men. There are shallow men & women. There are women and men who are ego-maniacs, criminals, immoral, have personality disorders, etc.

I'll just try and hit the top points about my wife. She is thoughtful of my needs and let's me be myself, even if it means being alone in the garage and tinkering on my motorcycle. She is always respectful of me in public, around friends and family. She operates under the "Praise in public, correct in private" paradigm. I do the same with her. We have never fought, called each other horrible names or berated each other. We have disagreements, but we deal with them in a constructive, respectful m…

" This should be the new goal for modern men, obtaining relationships that are open (but only for the man). " For some men maybe. For others, no. I am very traditional and I cannot separate sexual intimacy from emotional intimacy/love. My wife is my life partner and honestly the only woman that I desire or want to share those aspects of my life with.

You said mother and wives/girlfriends......perhaps you should be more clear and less snarky.

What makes her a great mom? My wife was a very loving, dedicated mother when the children were growing up. She still is, now that they are grown and she is in grandma mode. My mother was the opposite, mentally ill, abusive and neglectful. My wife is the exact opposite of my mother. Do you feel that your mother has shaped your expectations of what a woman should do as a partner, wife and mother? Yes, my mother shaped my expectation in what I did not want in a wife and mother of my children. Are y…

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
