Sadly I read the same set up scenario of divorce over and over on reddit, and more often than not, the person in your position gets screwed by the time its over. I would lean towards caution because of your child and pony up the money for a lawyer. Wish you an easy quick divorce

With your spouse having what sounds like basically zero income for over a decade, she has a really high likelihood of being awarded spousal support if she wants it. You could try mediation but I would consider having an initial consultation with a lawyer.

Doesnt seem like it makes sense to take the settlement upfront since there is so much more you dont know. If you've been advised that you're due some maintenance, then at the very least you should consider that. Speak with your lawyer about this, my gut feeling is that its convenient for her to have this be done since you may be owed something. Although not settling will be expensive in both parties... something to mull over

Both kids are yet to be in school, but she is a stay at home parent. She would be at her family's house if this happened. Thanks for the advice.

Probably best to have an honest conversation with her if possible. Suggest mediation, a mediator can help you come to a mutually beneficial solution if your wife is agreeable without the cost of legal counsel. If she isn't, then you may need get a lawyer. At least one that you can pay for ad hoc services such as reviewing custodial agreements, division of property, etc. Sadly, your avenue isnt clear until you know her intentions and mindset. Edit: concerning your question about divorce cost you …

Yeah since the business's establishment and success appears to have had happened during the marriage, she would most likely we entitled to some portion of it. But once again, get that lawyer, he/she will clear that up.

Sounds like one of your pauses is based entirely on what will happen financially, especially concerning your business. Consulting a lawyer can clear that up. Yea it will cost some money potentially, but then you'll know. It's the unknown portions of your divorce that will stress you most.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
