Eh, this isn't the full truth. At best it's a rationalization of one traditional norm (ie. partner pay gap). But it doesn't account for the rest (protector, initiator, etc). And with the decreasing number of western babies each year, poppy_blue's explanation is less and less relevant. The real reason is that women can afford to ask for a lot and offer little when it comes to dating. They have the bargaining power by virtue of demand. They enforce the rules.
