I think in these cases, it's actually worse than slander. If falsely accused, you can kiss any kind of a normal life goodbye. Even when cleared, it sticks with you. It's harder getting a job, your spouse may leave you, etc. And the reason is because the general person on the street is going to believe the worst. They're not going to want to chance you doing something, so they'll error on the side of caution.
