Even if you ignore punishment and consequences once it is discovered that the guy is not the father it's not like he can request any of the money to be paid back either. Even the process to stop paying is not immediate and he will still need to make new payments until the court approves removing him. There are only 4 states left in the US that recognize common law marriage.
