Absolutely. Child support is paid (in theory) to pay for the support of the child. If the paying parent fails to pay, the custodial parent has to contribute "both" parents shares, losing time value/appreciation in the amount of the paying parent's share. The paying parent who FAILED to pay, meanwhile, could simply earn interest on the money and pay at a later date. If this is done without penalty, the paying parent is rewarded for late payment. This is all assuming the amounts in question are re…

"Even some women"?

Yeap, attesting means you legally swear to it. An affidavit is basically just a document (it can be really short) that says you attest to something. As for what it means for your rights vis-a-vis the kid, I have no idea - it varies a lot by state, so if you end up googling around to learn more, make SURE you specify your state. I forgot to mention, but if you're on the birth cert. that looks good too. As in, birth cert. is also often conclusive evidence that gets someone on the hook for child su…

Depends on your state - I believe it usually just means signing an affidavit, but it may require "magic legal words" or consent of the lady. Probably you can google your state and "attest to paternity." I don't know how conclusive the attestation is. I know that for MOST purposes, it is conclusive as a matter of law - conclusive enough that it can put a person on the hook for child support. I do NOT know what would happen if your woman tried to contest the attestation at a later date - but it wo…

Law student here - call a lawyer BEFORE you run any tests!!! In MOST states, paternity can be proved in one of three ways - paternity test, the father ATTESTING to paternity, or adoption (not an issue here). If one of the kids really isn't yours, a paternity test would obviously prove it. If you are not the father, you have NO RIGHTS to the kid (almost always the case). IF you want to keep in touch with the one that (may turn out) not to be yours, the paternity test would make that damned near i…

You're right, corrected my post, thanks.

Agreed, and thanks for the FAQ pointer, my culpa. =p What I find most interesting is that everyone acknowledges the plight of Afghan women, but the rest of the populace is not spoken of. As long as these sorts of issues (such as child trafficking, or domestic abuse) are couched in gender-loaded terms progress will be slow.

Well, you apparently didn't think there was anything wrong with the view I thought would be offensive, so why call it rude?

I meant this issue, the Afghan boys, specifically. Circumcision, paternity rights, etc. are all popular topics but I hadn't seen this one raised here. Just thought I'd share.

So? I wasn't saying she did. I think the system worked here and I'm glad it's over with.

Yeah, it is. But the whole thing is a growing movement, and I think it tends to attract a lot of unsavory types. I don't think the movement as a whole can be faulted for it's asshole outliers. Then again, having that attitude all over the main page IS a bit silly.

Well, I had never heard of this position, and a quick google search turned up a lot of info about feminists working against male circumcision. The feminists at my college also made a big deal of opposing circumcision for everyone. So, whatever your beef with the ladies is, the pro-baby-penis-chopping crowd seems to be a wacky fringe minority. There are lots of real problems with mainstream feminism to pick on, we don't need to focus on the crazies.

You would be insane to have a baby with this person. How could you even think about bringing someone into this world who would be completely dependent on that nutbag?

I'm sure she was a winner to start with. Great choice, and way to deflect the blame for your poor choice!

What's wrong with letting kids decide what they want to play with?

I wasn't objecting to taking reasonable precaution against the crazies - I just took issue with/was saddened by the "nice guys finish last" sentiment. Doormats of any gender always finish last, but being nice ≠ being a doormat! It's a silly idea that leaves guys with a false conflict. "Should I be a doormat or be less than nice? Why isn't this working?" So counterproductive! My (male) friend explained it to me as, "Some guys see sex as a trade. They bring feathers, beads, and gentle words and ar…

Funny, I got with a nice guy and I think he won. =) Then again, I dated a number of "type-A" personalities who thought they were nice guys and were always surprised when they got dumped or screwed. Maybe not even trusting to the point where you audio-tape your encounters has more to do with a failed relationship than being a "nice guy" does. Just an idea.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
