War, as in all violent conflict between two groups to ever occur throughout human history. Men do the fighting and dying. Repeat that "only between 1 in a 50 and 1 in 10 men were killed" over the course of our species' lifespan, even reduced to 1 in 5000, and it adds up quickly. Remember, the statistic was that 34% of all men who have ever lived have descendants alive today.

I think we can all agree that at least a large part of this effect is that for women, mating privileges are a given, but only exceptional men receive them. It may be a small factor, but the primary reason is because of war. A hugely disproportionate amount of young men die in wars, which is what skews this statistic so much. Another major factor is the fact that men do most of the risky activities done by humans.
