Old school rules were adultery was a death penalty. Along with Rape, murder and profaning God's name. Should you believe in the Christian god (I guess Allah as well-same rules) than you can see that divine thought was that adultery was as bad as murder. I'll comment on the God I believe in. The Christian one. He inspired the verse that single men do better. He also gave us some crazy urges I'd be happy without.
