Doesn’t matter what you are. If you make an effort to become part of the church, you will fit in just like everyone else. Being Eastern Orthodox is nowhere near an "indirect way" to be a Catholic. Sure, they share some beliefs and practices, but they are different. I think UpTanks is right about the cultural lure for some, but I don't know why protestants are converting to eastern orthodoxy as I haven't personally seen it myself. There are two main Eastern Orthodox Archdioceses, the Greek Orthodox (which is mostly Greeks) and the Antiochian Orthodox (Which is mostly Middle Eastern and what I am a part of).
