Based on what my sons friends say, it is not the norm for a lot of their parents to engage them in too much detail. "How was your day?" seems to be the limit many parents go to to communicate with their children.

No kidding! I love talking to my Son about how he's feeling about things he's done in school and with his friends. I ask and we discuss what he's going through, what he's thinking about in life, how he feels regarding things we've done as a family. It's incredibly valuable time together.
