You're referring to Kants' categorial imperative. At the time this was indeed a revolutionary way to determine if you could gain a priori synthetic knowledge and if humans could determine their own morality. However, it has flaws. A famous example to showcase how it's flawed is: Say a potential murderer ask you where his victim that he is chasing went (you hid him in your house). Do you tell him where he is?
