Hard to say - when I’ve been to the Middle East (which isn’t that often) a lot of the stores in malls are run or staffed by migrant workers from South and Southeast Asia - the vast majority are women. I think that could potentially be explained by the fact that in order to hang on to power in largely patriarchal societies, the women who were able to attain/stay in power had to act even more extreme than a man to be taken seriously.
