I would argue that the Legend of Zelda is a lot less about saving Zelda as it is about saving their world. It's not like Ganon comes in thinking "Hey I'm going to wreck Zelda's day hurhurhur!" Ganon comes in and hijacks the entire kingdom of Hyrule intending to make the world his. Zelda really shows her "Triforce of Wisdom" throughout the series.
