Can you elaborate on what you mean here? What are you trying to do?

This is really important and gets a lot less credit than it should. I actually built an app recently to help guys practise speaking in a deeper and more stable kind of way.

Being a nice guy isn't a problem. George Clooney seems like a really nice guy, and he's one of the most attractive men on the planet. The issue is being submissive. Women, on some primal level, want a guy who can protect them and provide for them - and "nice" is kind of the badge that gets given to guys who aren't up to that. So going to the gym is obviously a great decision. How long have you been working out for? How's your voice too - do you sound confident and composed? And your body languag…

Well, you're a maths/science nerd. Have you ever seen QI? That's unashamedly academic but extremely interesting too. A few series of that could make anyone a more interesting person. I have to recommend podcasts too as a massive fan of them. They're especially great because you can enjoy them while you're doing something else, so you'll probably become a more productive person if you get into them. Subscribe to a few political podcasts, a couple about films, comedy, any other topic you find inte…

Where do you sit on these bar dates? I always sit on the same side of the table as the girl, so we're basically touching anyway.

Breathing from the diaphragm is the best answer. Not only does it make your voice more resonant, it deepens it too. It's a hard one to get into the habit of, but one thing that helped me was putting a band of kinesiology tape around the upper half of my body, just below my pecs. The tightness from the tape acted as an instant reminder to keep my breath low whenever it started to shift upwards. Other than that, I'd just practise speaking a bit louder. It's a habitual thing really, so you can just…

Broadly yes, although it sounds like you're overdoing it a bit. Think of guys women really like, someone like Ryan Gosling. They don't go around boasting about how great they are, acting like they're right about everything and threatening people who disagree. There's a lot more poise and stability to their confidence.

Oh, I did basically get into it to get girls and I've stuck with it for 8 years now. I think one key is to make the workout routine as comfortable as possible for you. I started at a very unintimidating gym, which was basically full of old people (well, not even full), and my initial workout was 45 minutes long and all done with easy machine weights. So it was a world away from what bodybuilders would recommend, but it meant that I enjoyed going and really got into the routine of working out, an…

Do you go to the gym? I always hate asking this on posts like these, but that's one thing that can make you several times more attractive (and it's good for your mental health too).

I've slept with the past six girls I dated on the first date, so I feel like I'm in a good position to answer this question. And my answer would be yes and no. Girls are easy in that they enjoy sex, so they want to have a lot of it. But unlike men, sex isn't a win-win scenario. They don't want the social stigma and, at least on some primal level, they don't want to risk getting pregnant from a guy who won't be able to protect or provide for his new family. Of the past six girls, three of them we…

I completely agree with you. I sometimes get the feeling that a lot of guys on here are looking for some trick to help them fake the confidence they need to attract loads of women. In reality, they should be improving their physique, their voice, their dress sense and even things like their personal achievements and conversation points. Confidence and attraction follows that.

That was a decent list, but #1 is basically at odds with #3. If you constantly stop yourself from saying anything negative, then you are censoring yourself, you're just doing it with some topics instead of others. Besides, I think it's a bad rule anyway. People like authenticity, possibly now more than ever. Relentless positivity can be just as grating as relentless negativity imo, both are dishonest.

Have you never heard of Tinder? Just find a nice short girl on there and take her on a date. If you're decent looking and have plenty of stuff to talk about, you'll do fine.

Fair point. 10% is still a lot of women though.

I honestly think you're overthinking the whole height thing. Girls don't necessarily want a tall guy, they just want a guy who's taller than they are. And plenty of women are shorter than 5'5". Also, your height doesn't define your masculinity. I've known dweebs who are 6'8" as well as guys who manage to be very manly despite being short. If you're fit (as in 'going to the gym regularly' fit) and don't have a silly voice, you should be fine.

Apologies if you already do this, but hitting the gym is almost always good advice for this kind of thread. My confidence shot up once I got a good physique and it's stayed at a fairly high level ever since.

On the high-pitched voice point, I've actually created an app to help men deepen their voices. You can check it out here: vocularapp.com

Are you having trouble getting matches or just getting numbers after you've matched with the girl?

Oh, stop it. It can't be much of a shortcoming, since I do really well on dates.

Having lots of interests helps a lot. I listen to tonnes of podcasts and try to watch as many cult films as I can. Even when I was living in London, I tried to walk the entire city so that I had something to say about each bit.

I would say just go on your own then. Although it sounds like it makes sense to go to the gym with a friend, I've always found it's more hassle than it's worth.

Did you mention anything you liked that she hadn't tried before? Normally, I talk about a film I really like or a place I want to visit, then use that for the second date. Did anything like that come up?

I don't mean to sound so reductive, but "go to the gym" is almost always good advice here. Guys with great physiques rarely get 'friendzoned' and, even if it doesn't effect the women around you, you'll feel so much better for it.

Hmm, I'm probably a bad guy to ask in that I'm quite good at just making myself do stuff. As soon as I decided I was going to join a gym, that was it. That said, I have a couple of tips. The first is to make the gym as enjoyable as possible for yourself. Choose a gym you feel comfortable in (the one I first joined was full of pensioners and weight machines that basically told you what to do). It wasn't a good gym by anyone's definition, but it was unintimidating and easy. I also always listened …

I even find this with online messaging. With Tinder, there's a temptation to pore over everything you write and try to be as witty as possible. But you're not really "being yourself" if I do this, and as soon as you actually meet up with the girl, you're going to feel like a slower, lesser version of your virtual self. Instead, I say pretty much the first thing that comes into my head. It's honest, and hopefully never comes across as if I'm trying too hard to impress anyone.

I'd definitely get a gym routine and stick by it. I've been going for 7 years and it's one of the best things I ever did. The transformation, both physically and mentally, was so great I kinda long for the days when I was a skinny guy getting stronger. Let me know if you want to be recommended a routine btw. So long as I know what equipment you have available to you, I can write you one.

I'm British, so kino really doesn't come naturally for me. However, I've found that one trick that always works is softly brushing up against the girl when we're walking somewhere. It's subtle, it's never caused any kind of negative reaction, and it's something that people seem to do naturally when they like each other - they converge in all kinds of ways. So that would be my best advice: just be close to her, don't worry about trying to brush her hair or anything that might feel like a move.
