But gender is a good predictor of risk. Until a driving history has been established, the insurance company doesn't have very many ways of determining that without doing some extensive prying. That prying bothers people and is expensive to do, so they look at gender first. Yes, they'll be wrong sometimes, but they'll be right more often than wrong, and that's what counts when money is on the line.

I would be fine with that, yes. But any company who actually did that would very likely lose a lot of subscribers (Chinese or otherwise), so I sincerely doubt it would happen. Insurance is about calculating risk, and however they want to calculate risk is up to them. If I don't like how they calculate risk, I can take my business elsewhere.

The margins on insurance are really thin, so they spend a lot of time calculating risk. However, it's a lot easier to calculate risk based on the insured's gender than it is to determine how much driving they do, when they do it, where they go, how aggressively they drive, etc. With tracking technology this is changing, however, so I suspect that the premium difference between genders will be reduced, and the premium difference due to different driving patterns will increase.

Males get into more accidents because they log more hours of driving. That's pretty much it. Which doesn't really matter, because that's indicative of their risk to the insurance company. If you want to go with an insurance company that charges based on mileage instead of gender, go for it. Again, women cost the healthcare system more. Should they have to pay a higher premium for that? Yes. Everyone should pay for their own health care and insurance.

That's how insurance works though. You charge people based on risk. Male drivers are riskier on average, and it's easier (cheaper) to price based on gender than to dig for other factors that are more predictive of risk. Same goes for age, employment, and marital status. If you don't like that, look for an insurance company who will assess risk based on other factors.
