You may not like it. However, in my state they are protected by statute. They can detain. It's law. They don't detain people who May be stealing, but people who are. They have proof. Video surveillance. There's no question about it. A suspect may be charge and even adjudicated guilty but in civil court they could still sue and win. Tort law and criminal law are totally different. Attacking someone from the rear is not reasonable, nor is searching a person. Restraining someone is not attacking, and when was he searching?
