Let me put it this way. My kids, 12 and 14, are now ruined by the divorce court system and their mother abusing the system. That sucks. Sorry to hear that. The problem is not marriage. Sorry, bad news for that statistically: Break up rates for unmarried couples in the three countries I have seen the data for recently (USA, Sweden, UK) are about twice as high as the break up rates for married couples. This seems to be true irrespective of the popularity of marriage. Break up rates for unmarried couples in the three countries I have seen the data for recently (USA, Sweden, UK) are about twice as high as the break up rates for married couples. Break-up is getting more popular across the board. Being unmarried makes it much more likely statistically.

Sweden has one of the lowest marriage rates, and one of the highest cohabiting unmarried birth rate (56% vs 35% in the USA), but in Sweden, the split up rate for unmarried cohabiting couples is still twice as high as the marriage split up rate if the children are solely from that relationship, and three times as high if they aren't all.
