Sure virtual points don't matter. But you said it yourself, downvote = disagree. Dogpiled comments are 'soft-deleted' to some degree, there's a legit psychological effect and it makes that comment get taken less seriously. Now I'm all up for actual garbage comments to be ignored, but sometimes some legit positive feedback (although negative sounding) gets discarded cos the general opinion on the comment just slid out of control.
