stay-at-home motherhood are much less work than most careers. Depends if they want to do a good job at being a parent, housewife, chef, etc., or if they don't care. Also depends greatly on how much money and how many children the family has.

It would. As a result, black people tend to move away from (or not move to) those areas, or do more of their business with each other or by mail-order/internet. Over time, this self-imposed restriction on free trade impoverishes the area and punishes the discriminators even more.

Why should society put up with someone who really really wants to discriminate against someone? For the same reason that we have to put up with lots of other things that people do that we don't like: Because it is with in their rights to do so, and to deny them that right means that our own rights may well be infringed in other ways which we don't like. No one forces anyone to run a business. Right, but they're forcing you to not run a business if you really really want to discriminate against someone for some reason. They weren't prepared to act in a civilised manner on their own so the government had to force them to. The market also forces them to, but it takes a little longer. They don't have a right to stay at someone else's hotel, and as such they aren't being oppressed. Further, forcing the hotel owner to allow someone he sees as immoral is certainly not going to make him change his mind and might instead drive his hatred deeper. In that respect, the hotel owner is being oppressed because he is being forced to house someone he doesn't want to house.

Discriminating against customers is a bad move generally, since you are harming your own bottom line. Legislation against discrimination may "solve" the problem faster, but it has lots of unintended consequences as well and tends to institutionalize the racism/etc.

However, "public spaces" tends to get defined as private property where the public is generally allowed, such as a restaurant. If I want to set up a restaurant where no people with brown skin, or perhaps no people with blue eyes, are permitted, I will doubtless find myself in a lot of legal hot water.

Personally, I support the right of private individuals and groups to discriminate against those who they wish, because I would like the freedom to exclude these sorts of people from my business and organizations. Makes it easy when they don't have to keep their bigotry/racism/whatever on the down-low.
